Daniel Begay (Santa Clara/Dine), is known for his deeply carved pottery. He was recently featured in Native American Art Magazine. He says, “I try to create a balance between realism and the abstract. I want my animals to look representational but not too realistic. Maria Martinez (1887-1980), San Ildefonso, was famous for her black-on-black pottery. The silvery “gunmetal” fired pieces are more scarce but a striking coloration. The jar is back was painted by Julian around 1924 and the one in front by Popovi Da in 1964. Both were fired to a silvery coloration. Nathan Begaye (1958-2010), Hopi/Navajo, was known for his colorfully painted pottery. Each piece was coil-built, painted, and traditionally fired. Grace Medicine Flower (b. 1938), Santa Clara, was known for her etched and carved pottery. In the 1980s her delicately etched pottery was innovative in design and form. Russell Sanchez (San Ildefonso) is famous for his clay bears. These large bears reflect the range of his work including polychrome, red, and gunmetal black fired. Congrats to Jody Folwell (Santa Clara) for exhibition, “O’Powa O’Meng”, which just closed at the New Mexico Museum of Art. This new jar is made from white micaceous clay and is painted with birds on the exterior. Jody is known for her creative shapes and innovative imagery. Steve Lucas (Hopi-Tewa) is known for his creative pottery designs. This new large plate is fully painted with bee-weed and clay slips, then traditionally fired. Tony Da (1940-2008), San Ildefonso, was famous for his etched pottery. This plate is from 1967, the year he began making pottery. Shan Goshorn (1957-2018), East Band Cherokee, was famous for her unique baskets. Each piece was woven in a Cherokee style but often using archival documents, historical photos, and treaties. These two pieces are form 2015 and 2016. One focuses on casinos and gaming while the other is about “medicine stories”. LuAnn Tafoya (b. 1938), Santa Clara, learned to make pottery from her mother, Margaret Tafoya. This large jar is one of her classic shape with a design that tells a story as the piece is turned. LuAnn is famous for her large vessels that are carved, highly polished, and traditionally fired. We began working with LuAnn in 1997 at our Scottsdale gallery.
