Floyd Sonnier's Beau Cajun Art Gallery

Floyd Sonnier's Beau Cajun Art Gallery Dedicated to the preservation of the Cajun Culture His mom had just made a fresh batch of soap. Next to him on the ground is a small wooden box.

A young French-speaking Cajun boy, humming a simple tune, sifts through the ashes around an old black pot in the backyard of a humble old share-cropper's farm house. He picks pieces of charcoal from the cooled ashes and gently puts them in the small box. The boy was about three years old. These precious bits of charcoal chosen with love and care were probably the one single most important factor i

n the beginning of Floyd Sonnier's life as an artist. "Floyd Sonnier is a man who is fiercely proud of the fact that he is a Cajun. He has decided that he will not allow the Acadian culture and heritage to die. He is a uniquely gifted artist who for nearly a decade now has devoted himself and his art almost solely to portraying the Cajun lifestyle that he knows and loves so well." This was the opening paragraph of an interview in 1983 for a well-known national magazine describing perfectly Floyd Sonnier's word and lifestyle as it was then. Floyd Sonnier's Art Gallery and Studio

A Victorian house, constructed in 1918 by Mr. Albert Bourque of Scott, Floyd purchased the home in 1991 and moved his gallery and studio there in April of 1998. The gallery is furnished with primitive Louisiana antiques, none of which are for sale, and one can enjoy nostalgic feelings of turn-of-the-century life on the prairie and bayous when visiting.

Leap Frog / Saute Crapaud

This Original artwork was done by Floyd in 1993 and was featured in his 1995 calendar. This drawing has never been in print and still hangs in the gallery today.

In Floyd’s own words:

Few toys were available for the Cajun children before the turn of the century and for sometimes afterward. Most past times were taken up playing simple games. A rubber ball and a broom handle for a bat; hide-and-seek; marbles; steal-the-flag... these were but a few of the games played by these kids. One game that took up many play-times, especially the boys, was one called leapfrog played by two or more. My brother and I, our friends and cousins, spent many a Sunday afternoon playing leap-frog in addition to other games.
