Through our breathtaking seaside learning center, we bring the adventures and explorations of ocean science to life. Powered by the Long Marine Laboratory, a world-renowned university research facility, the Seymour Marine Discovery Center offers hands-on immersion into the world of ocean exploration and discovery. With a 20,000-square-foot visitor center, guests can touch a shark, explore the late

st discoveries in ocean science, and take in the spectacular Monterey Bay, called the “Serengeti of the sea,” for its incredible diversity of marine life. The Center offers a deeper dive into the research conducted at Long Marine Lab and a chance for everyone to find their inner scientist through rich experiential learning programs including school field-trips, summer youth programs, Science Sundays, volunteer opportunities, internships, and more.

A “mystery mollusc” that glows like stars?

His team eventually determined it’s a unique nudibranch (sea slug) that lives in the deep water column. The ocean is the largest habitat on our planet. It claims two thirds of the earth’s surface and boasts an average depth that hovers around 13,000 feet. Many of its dimensions remain unexplored, which has growing consequences for conservation. Senior scientist Steve Haddock says that when people think of the deep sea as little more than a muddy floor, they’re missing the thousands of feet above the bottom that teem with surreal animals and ecosystems. You truly have to see it to believe it, which is why this special Field Diary episode follows Steve from the podcast studio onto the R/V Rachel Carson for a trip out to sea.

Join Steve and guest host Cassidy Beach as they descend through different layers of life with the remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Ventana to capture photos and samples for Steve’s bioluminescence research. A few hearts are also captured by some of the adorable, fantastical creatures they encounter along the way.
