Did you know a military encampment existed near Harvey West Park and Evergreen Cemetery?

Known as Camp Stoneman, this 1880's photograph captures the camp during its days as a training facility for the National Guard, where soldiers practiced weapons training, drills, and engaged in sham battles.

The camp was named for General George Stoneman, a Civil War cavalry commander who later became the 15th governor of California.

Today, you’d probably never guess that this peaceful part of Santa Cruz was once a place of military drills and training!

What a night, Santa Cruz!

Nearly 200 of you joined us for Black Tie Roller Ball, transforming the museum into a night of skating, music, style, laughter, and community.

Thank you for showing up, dressing up, lacing up, and bringing so much energy to the MAH. Seeing the Solari Gallery filled with people connecting, dancing, and experiencing the museum in an entirely different way is exactly what makes nights like this so special.

And it speaks to something bigger about why the MAH matters.

Museums aren’t only places where we preserve art and history. They are places where community happens! Where we can gather, experiment, celebrate, create new memories, and shape the stories that future generations will inherit.

A huge thank you to our incredible partners, DJ TSU ALI, and everyone who helped bring Roller Ball to life.

Did you know a castle once stood in Seabright? 🏰

Originally built at the turn of the 20th century as a hot saltwater bathhouse, the Scholl-Mar Castle was later transformed into the castle-inspired structure many locals remember. Sadly, the landmark was demolished in 1967.

Did you ever visit the Scholl-Mar Castle?
