Santa Clarita Artists Association Presents “Sticks & Stones” Nature Art Exhibition

OLD TOWN NEWHALL, CA — The Santa Clarita Artists Association proudly presents “Sticks & Stones,” a new art exhibition celebrating the beauty, texture, color, and inspiration found in the natural world. The exhibition opens Friday, September 4, at the SCAA Gallery in Old Town Newhall, with an opening reception on Saturday, September 5, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM.

“Sticks & Stones” invites visitors to experience nature through the eyes of local artists, exploring the organic forms, landscapes, textures, and unexpected beauty found in the world around us. The exhibition showcases the creativity and diverse perspectives of artists inspired by nature and its endless possibilities.

The opening reception on Saturday evening will offer an engaging experience for art lovers of all ages. Artist Noah Wohlenberg will be painting live, giving guests an opportunity to watch the creative process unfold. Judy Baerg will host an interactive necklace-making station, inviting attendees to create their own nature-inspired piece. Adding to the festive atmosphere, Isabella Bazler returns to the gallery to perform live music.

The Santa Clarita Artists Association invites the community to come enjoy an evening of art, music, creativity, and connection while celebrating the opening of this unique exhibition.

We enjoyed an excellent two-day workshop with Danny Folkman. The 25 participants included both members and non-members, with attendees traveling as far as San Diego, Orange County, and Alameda, California.

Danny’s experience and approachable teaching style made the workshop both engaging and informative. He demonstrated his painting techniques, offered practical guidance, and enriched the lessons with stories from his artistic journey. One highlight was his story about his high school art teacher, Dr. Richmond Garrick, whose ballpoint sketch of President Barack Obama was received by the White House.

Danny encouraged us to carry a drawing pad, draw everything, and practice as often as possible, reminding us that drawing is the foundation of strong painting. When asked how to correct a painting, he replied, “I’d rather you start a new one.” His message was clear: consistent practice leads to improvement.

Danny is a rising star, and we were fortunate to learn from his talent and insight.

Friday August 14, Plein-Air Painting at Ventura Botanic Gardens

Join us for a Friday morning plein-air painting outing on August 14 at Ventura Botanic Gardens. This month, we will be joining Plein-Air Ventura County, spearheaded by Laura Jespersen. You can find more information and future painting locations on Facebook under Plein-Air Ventura County in the Events section.
This is a wonderful opportunity to paint outdoors, enjoy the beauty of the gardens, and get away from the summer heat. Plein-Air Ventura County has been granted access to the gardens for two days, August 14 and 15.
Laura plans to be at the gardens on Friday from approximately 9:30 AM to 2:00 PM. I plan to arrive around 9:00 AM and stay until about 12:00 or 1:00 PM. Artists are welcome to stay for the full day, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Admission will be free for artists, and restrooms are available near the entrance.
For those interested, there will also be a personal garden tour with Joe Cahill, Executive Director of the Ventura Botanic Gardens, at 1:00 PM on Friday, August 14. The tour will begin at the Welcome Center.
Directions to Ventura Botanic Gardens:
Take CA-126 W until you merge onto US-101 N.
Take Exit 70A for California Street. Use the right two lanes to turn right onto S. California Street.
Turn right onto E. Thompson Boulevard. Turn left after Leashless Brewing onto S. Chestnut Street.
Turn left onto Poli Street.
Turn right when you see Ventura Botanic Gardens at 567 Poli Street, Ventura, CA 93001.
