I’ve been playing with texture and surprises in a tiny 6 by 6 inch piece called “Basking in the Sun.” At first glance, it’s a barren tree with all these twisty, sprawling branches, but if you look closer, you’ll spot little tree spirits hiding right in the trunk and limbs. I love how the background shifts from soft, glowing yellows and greens to a quilted purple foreground that almost feels alive beneath the tree. This one was all about layering earth tones and fluid lines to capture a moment of quiet transformation—nature having a secret conversation with itself. It’s small but packed with character, and I hope it invites you to lean in and discover something unexpected. Available at Art Collective, St. Augustine.

I just finished a new piece called Copper Veins and Scarlet Flames, and I can’t get enough of how it turned out. This one’s a 12 by 12 mixed media collage centered on a big, bold poppy that feels like it’s bursting right off the canvas. I layered painted paper and added copper paint to give it this surprising shimmer that catches the light just right. The reds are vivid and rich, and those little yellow stamens in the center add a punch of contrast that keeps things interesting. Surrounding it, green leaves help ground the whole thing while the warm, textured background keeps the energy flowing. It was such a fun process—playing with layers and textures, letting the copper veins weave through the petals. Sometimes a flower just wants to make a statement, and I’m happy to be the one giving it a stage. Available at The Brick City Center for the Arts, Ocala.

I just finished a tiny new piece called "Threads of Earth and Breath," measuring 6 by 4 inches. It’s all about getting up close to a woven basket overflowing with big, soft white flowers—painted with thick, textured strokes that almost feel like you could run your fingers over them. I spent a lot of time layering browns, yellows, and a splash of green for the basket, trying to capture the details without getting too precious about it. The background is a mix of earthy reds and smoky whites, adding just enough mystery without shouting for attention. I had a lot of fun blending realism with a bit of abstraction here—it’s like the basket and flowers are whispering stories rather than shouting. Small scale, but packed with everything I love about working with texture and color.

I spent some time getting up close and personal with a vibrant pink bloom for this new little piece—just 5 by 5 inches of textured, mixed media fun. I layered thick brushstrokes of oil paint alongside tissue paper to build up that rich, tactile feel you can almost reach out and touch. The petals swirl in all shades of pink, from bold magenta to soft blush, with a center that’s alive with dark purples, greens, and pops of yellow. For the background, I went with a rough, earthy yellow that gives the whole thing a lively contrast without stealing the spotlight. It’s a small burst of color and texture that’s all about celebrating the beauty of a single flower—sometimes the smallest things hold the biggest energy.

I’ve been having a bit of fun with something small and vibrant again—6 by 6 inches of pure color and texture. “Delicate Blooms in Twilight Veil” features these three bright blue flowers that really stole the show for me. Their centers mix yellow, white, and a pop of red-orange, which felt like the perfect way to bring a little extra energy against a moody, teal and purple background. I worked with mixed media to get those petal shadows and highlights just right—adding some depth without getting too fussy. It’s one of those pieces where every detail feels like a quiet discovery, like finding a hidden garden wrapped in evening light. Small but full of personality, I hope it sparks a little joy for anyone who stops to look.

I’ve been having fun with a smaller scale piece this time—6 by 6 inches of pure sunflower energy. “Twilight Suns in Golden Light” came together with layers of mixed media, and yes, that includes a metallic gold background that really makes these two sunflowers pop. I wanted the petals to feel alive and a bit wild, like they’re caught in a gentle breeze just before sunset. The deep reds and blacks in the centers add a little punch against all that warm bronze and brown around them. It’s a piece that feels cozy and bright at once, like sunshine you can hold in your hands. Sometimes working small reminds me how much power a tiny canvas can have.
