There’s something magical about finding a flash of life hidden amongst the colour. 🧡

Amongst Amber Hues captures one of the rainforest’s tiny jewels — the red-eyed tree frog — surrounded by sweeping layers of amber, burnt orange and fiery tropical colour.

I wanted this piece to feel warm, vibrant and alive… the kind of artwork that doesn’t simply hang in a room, but changes the way the room feels.

So, what are all those hands doing?

When I revisited Hidden, the composition began to take on a darker meaning for me.

The female form is fragmented. Hands surround her — reaching, touching, wanting and expecting.

It made me think about the expectations placed on women. How we’re seen. How we’re expected to look. What we’re expected to give. And the pressure we can put on ourselves trying to live up to someone else’s idea of beauty.

I don’t see this entirely through the lens of female objectification. Life is more complicated than that.

But I do think appearance affects the way we’re perceived — sometimes more than we’d like to admit.

And that’s what I love about Hidden.

She’s bright and playful at first glance.

But look a little longer and she becomes slightly uncomfortable.

Maybe that’s why, after all these years, I still find her interesting.

Before she was “Hidden”, she was a high-school art project.

The assignment was simple: take another artist’s work, dissect it, rearrange the pieces and introduce new elements to create something completely different.

The original project was black and white.

Years later, I came back to it.

I wanted more colour. More energy. More me.

So I transformed it into this bold, unapologetically colourful piece — but somewhere in that process, it also began to tell a much deeper story.

Look closely at the hands.
The fragmented female form.
The faces.
The reaching.

They’re there for a reason.

Tomorrow, I’ll tell you what they mean to me.

She’s bold. She’s complicated. And she’s been HIDDEN for way too long.

This is Hidden — a 36” × 28” original mixed-medium artwork in acrylic and chalk pastel.

What began as an art project when I was much younger was something I later revisited, pulled apart and made completely my own — replacing black and white with unapologetic colour and adding elements that carried a very different message.

Look closely.

The hands.
The fragmented body.
The faces.
The demands coming from every direction.

There’s more going on here than you might first think.

Over the next few posts, I’m going to tell you her story. ✨

And for the first time in a long time, Hidden is also available to collect.
