Aviation is meant to be explored!

At Hiller Aviation Camp, learning goes beyond the classroom with hands-on activities that encourage kids to build, create, experiment, explore, and discover.

Whether your camper already loves aviation or is ready to discover something new, there’s more to explore at Hiller this fall and winter.

These archival photos offer a behind-the-scenes look at the Hiller Flying Platform in various stages of development.

Development of the prototype began in 1954, bringing together Charles H. Zimmerman’s theories of “kinesthetic control” with ducted-fan research. Just nine months later, the Model 1031 Flying Platform was completed, with its first free flight taking place on January 27, 1955.

These photos provide a fascinating glimpse at the testing, engineering, and evolution behind one of Hiller’s most distinctive aircraft.

From the ground to flight, which photo would you have wanted to see in person?

Think you know the A-4 Skyhawk?

This compact aircraft packed some serious capability. Small enough to operate from U.S. Navy carriers without folding wings, the A-4E could carry up to 8,500 pounds of payload and reach speeds of 585 knots.

Over its long career, the Skyhawk served as an attack aircraft, flew with the Blue Angels, and became an “aggressor” aircraft at the Navy’s Top Gun Fighter Weapons School.

Come get a closer look at an A-4 Skyhawk cockpit at Hiller Aviation Museum.

Hiller helicopters making headlines

A look back at vintage magazine covers featuring Hiller aircraft, from a Hiller helicopter soaring above the Golden Gate Bridge to some of the more unusual designs from aviation history.

These covers are a fun reminder of Hiller’s place in the story of Bay Area aviation and the excitement surrounding vertical flight during the 1950s and 1960s.

Which cover is your favorite?

Have you stopped by to see our Artist-in-Residence at work?

Amber Allen is currently working on her third painting at the museum!

A multidisciplinary artist, Amber creates work exploring themes of exploration, nostalgia, and the human experience, often through a space-age lens. During her residency at the museum, she has been working on a series of large surreal oil paintings inspired by current and former astronauts.

If you haven’t had a chance to see her work or her talent in action, now is a great time to stop by. Amber is typically onsite Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from about 10am–3:30/4pm.

These photographs capture a Hiller UH-12 flying above the Bay Area decades ago, when the surrounding highways, hillsides, and neighborhoods looked quite different from what we see today.

One view takes the UH-12 past the Golden Gate Bridge, while others show the helicopter above expanding freeways surrounded by stretches of open land.

The aircraft may be the star of the photos, but the changing Bay Area landscape makes them just as fascinating.
