Museo 956 & Save the San Juan Hotel Collective with the support of Trucha RGV & UTRGV Mexican American Studies Undergraduate & Graduate Programs announce our Mexican American Studies escuelita de verano.

Why escuelita?
In the late 19th century, grassroots schools for Mexican Americans led primarily by women opened up throughout the Southwest, especially in Texas. The schools focused on Mexican history, Spanish language literacy and orgullo for the culture. Today, with DEI & Ethnic Studies under attack, Museo brings Mexican American Studies to the people. The classes are free. Recommended age is 13 & up. If you have little ones bring them. We will provide activities such as reading and crafts at Museo. Topics will be announced weekly. No need to register, all welcome until capacity is reached. All classes conducted in Tex-Mex / Spanglish. All materials will be provided.

¿Por qué "escuelita"?
A finales del siglo XIX, surgieron por el suroeste de Estados Unidos —especialmente en Texas— escuelas comunitarias para mexicoamericanos, dirigidas principalmente por mujeres. Estas escuelitas se centraban en enseñar la historia de México, la alfabetización en español y el orgullo por la cultura mexicana. Hoy en día, ante los ataques contra las iniciativas de diversidad, equidad e inclusión (DEI) y los estudios étnicos, el Museo 956 trae los estudios mexicoamericanos a la comunidad. Las clases son gratuitas. La edad recomendada es a partir de los 13 años. Si tiene niños pequeños, puede traerlos; ofreceremos actividades como lectura y manualidades para ellos en el Museo. Los temas se anunciarán semanalmente. No es necesario registrarse; todos son bienvenidos hasta que ya no haya espacio. Las clases se imparten en tex-mex / spanglish. Se proporcionarán todos los materiales.

We invite you to join us for our final Reels at the Museum event on Saturday, June 13th, with special guest Placido Salazar, Hall of Fame Inductee and US Veteran. As narrator of the film, he will share expert insights into its production. Additionally, he will perform alongside Mariachi Hermanos Caballero. Please reserve your spot for this exclusive event, as seating capacity is limited. We recently had the pleasure of visiting Placido Salazar at his morning show at KLMO, located at 1414 Fredericksburg Rd, San Antonio, Texas, inside the Totally Tejano Museum. The museum, open Friday to Sunday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, is a must-visit when in San Antonio.

A reminder that our final 'Reels at the Museum' documentary, Tex Mex- The Music of the Borderland, featuring 2025 Hall of Fame Inductee Placido Salazar as narrator, will be screened next week. The program will include live musical entertainment by Mariachi Hermanos Guerrero from the McAllen area. Kindly RSVP to Patricia at 956-245-5005 to reserve your seat, as space is limited.
