Museum Monday: Did You Know? 🐄💦

Before it became known as Harlingen City Lake, locals called it “Laguna Las Vacas”, Spanish for “Lake of the Cows!”

Why? Before the Stock Laws were put into effect, cattle from the village often wandered into the muddy lake and became stuck! According to local history, it cost $10 to pull a cow out of the mud — quite a hefty price in the early 1900s!

As Harlingen grew, city leaders worked to protect the community’s water supply by adopting Stock Laws and ordinances to keep livestock away from the lake. What was once a muddy watering spot for wandering cattle eventually became an important city reservoir, helping support a growing Harlingen.

Today, Harlingen City Lake continues to serve an important purpose as part of the city’s water system and remains one of Harlingen’s quiet historic treasures.

💬 Had you ever heard the story of “Laguna Las Vacas”?

🚔 Museum Monday: The History of the Harlingen Police Department 🚔

Did you know?

The roots of the Harlingen Police Department date back to April 22, 1914, when Harlingen officially appointed its first police officers, C. Block and Morris Chaudoin, to help maintain law and order in the growing community.

In Harlingen’s earliest days, policing looked much different from what it does today. With the city still developing, law enforcement was handled by only a small number of officers working to keep the peace in what was quickly becoming a thriving railroad town.

As Harlingen grew, so did the need for organized public safety. Over the decades, the Harlingen Police Department evolved from a modest force into the dedicated department that continues to serve and protect our community today.

Take a look back in time with these incredible historic photos of Harlingen officers who helped shape our city’s history.
