Contemporary at Blue Star

Contemporary at Blue Star Contemporary at Blue Star inspires, innovates, and nurtures through contemporary art.
(784)

Developed from a grassroots event in July of 1986, Blue Star Contemporary (BSC) is the first and longest-running nonprofit space for contemporary art in San Antonio. The establishment of BSC as an exhibition space arose from the need to provide a platform for the work and ideas of local contemporary artists. In the years since its inception, BSC has grown with the community, instigating positive c

hange in both the art community and the community at large with its mission to inspire the creative genius in us all by nurturing artists through innovative contemporary art. In 2016, BSC debuted a major renovation of its 11,000 square foot exhibition space, providing an enhanced presentation platform for artwork of all media. Blue Star Contemporary continues to be an incubator for contemporary art in San Antonio as a W.A.G.E-certified organization committed to the fair compensation for creative work that hosts more than twenty exhibitions annually within its four on-site galleries and multiple offsite locations within the community. BSCโ€™s exhibitions feature both emerging and world-renowned artists who hail both from the Alamo City and across the globe. Over 300,000 visitors each year experience contemporary art with BSC through exhibitions, the MOSAIC after-school education program, public art, and community events.

In conjunction with the Contemporaryโ€™s Xicanx Symposium, the Contemporary is pleased to partner with Slab Cinema Arthouse for a public screening of the documentary film ASCO: Without permission at Slab (134 Blue Star, San Antonio, TX 78204, next to the Contemporaryโ€™s Education Space)

ASCO: WITHOUT PERMISSION challenges the limits of documentary conventions to tell the story of a revolutionary Chicano art group who turned 1970s LA into their defiant canvas. Merging activism with radical art-making, ASCO challenged the established order of Hollywood, museums, and media and are now considered amongst the 20th centuryโ€™s most significant artists. Director Travis Gutiรฉrrez Senger mirrors their boundary-breaking spirit by creating new works made in the ASCO tradition with a new generation of Latinx artists. The result is more than a profile โ€“ itโ€™s a reimagining of whatโ€™s possible in art and cinema, celebrating iconoclasts who were decades ahead of their time.

๐— ๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐˜ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—”๐—ฟ๐˜๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜ | James Cobb was born in La Mesa, California, raised in San Diego and St. Louis, and has lived and worked in San Antonio since 1982. A self taught artist and musician, his early influences ranged from underground comics and Big Daddy Roth to psychedelic poster art and the abstract expressionist jazz album designs of the 1950s and 60s.

Since the early 1980s he has developed an extensive body of oil painting and digital work, exhibiting in solo shows across the U.S., Europe, and Japan, and participating in group exhibitions at major institutions including the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, the Phoenix Art Museum, and the San Antonio Museum of Art. His work is held in museum and private collections, including those of Taylor Hackford, Henry Hopkins, and Hal Bromm.

James is also one of the exhibiting artists in the original Blue Star Exhibition that started it all in 1986! We are thrilled to welcome James back with an exhibition during our 40th anniversary year.
