Children under 12 years old are always FREE at the museum. Enjoy free general admission every Thursday from 4 to 9 p.m., courtesy of H-E-B, and the first Sunday of every month from Noon to 5 p.m., courtesy of the Dickson Allen Foundation. The McNay Art Museum engages a diverse community in the discovery and enjoyment of the visual arts. Built in the 1920s by artist and educator Marion Koogler McNay, the Spanish Colonial Revival residence became the site of Texas’s first modern art museum when it opened in 1954. In June 2008, the museum opened the 45,000-square-foot Jane and Arthur Stieren Center for Exhibitions designed by internationally renowned French architect Jean-Paul Viguier. Today, 200,000 visitors a year enjoy works by modern masters including Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh, Edward Hopper, Joan Mitchell, Alice Neel, Georgia O’Keeffe, Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. The 25 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds include sculptures by Willie Cole, Robert Indiana, Luis A. Jiménez Jr., Alejandro Martín, George Rickey, Joel Shapiro, Kiki Smith, Tom Wesselmann, and more.

For San Antonio-based artist Cruz Ortiz, portraiture can begin with a simple conversation, allowing a moment to unfold naturally rather than asking someone to hold a perfect pose.

In this interview, Cruz Ortiz (CRUZ ORTIZ) and Connie Arismendi (Connie Arismendi), a model and fellow artist, share how conversation and time spent together shape the portrait-making process.

In “Collection Conversations: Cruz Ortiz and the Modern Portrait,” Cruz’s contemporary portraits are paired with historic portraits from the McNay’s collection, bringing artists and subjects from different eras into conversation.

On View | “Caroline Kent: Meet me after dark, past the fence, through the arches, near the fountain. (hushed whispers)” by Chicago-based artist Caroline Kent.

Upon entering the AT&T Lobby, Kent’s site-specific work greets visitors with a mural inspired by the Spanish Colonial revival architecture of Marion Koogler McNay’s home. Kent’s composition suggests moments of action, pause, and anticipation as geometric forms oscillate between object and shadow. By shifting between flat paint and three-dimensional relief, the installation invites viewers to step inside an unfolding visual dialogue between domestic history, light, and architectural form.

Congratulations to visual artist and San Antonio native Vincent Valdez (Vincent Valdez), who has been named a 2026 MacArthur Fellow by MacArthur Foundation ()! The esteemed “genius grant” is given to individuals with extraordinary talent as an investment in their creative potential.

McNay Art Museum was proud to be home to Valdez’s first exhibition after he graduated from RISD (Rhode Island School of Design) with a BFA in 2000. In 2004, he was the youngest artist ever to have a solo exhibition at the McNay.

We are honored to hold 27 of his works in our permanent collection. Known for creating monumental-scale works reflecting on American identity and the struggle for justice, he draws from Chicano artistic traditions that center political and social histories often obscured in mainstream media.

Make a visit to the McNay to see his works firsthand, including “The Strangest Fruit 9” (2013) and “Virgin of Guadalupe” (2001) on view now, and stay tuned for “Twenty One” (2008) which will be in featured in Part 2 of “Two Faced” opening on December 17, 2026.

We are excited to see where this award takes his thriving career!

We are thrilled to announce that the Kronkosky Charitable Foundation has awarded the McNay Art Museum a $500,000 grant to support enhanced accessibility across the institution’s 25-acre campus and expand access to its digital and programmatic offerings.
