“Sunday in Helper, The Allegory of the Bourbon Bottle” by Justin Wheatley is 36x36 for $4300.

While spending a weekend in Helper, we attended church at the LDS chapel in this painting.

During the meeting, an older gentleman who had been invited to speak came up to the pulpit. Before saying anything, he pulled a half-full bottle of bourbon from the inner pocket of his suit coat and put it on the stand where everyone could see it.

This was intriguing to us, because we are taught to abstain from alcohol. Having given speeches to my own congregation back home, I understood the need for water in case of a dry mouth or a sudden bout of coughing. I wondered (and assumed others did as well) if he was going to take a swig.

The gentleman began to talk about his father, a hard-working man who loved his bourbon and didn’t care much for going to church. The speaker’s mother would take him and his siblings to the chapel every Sunday, always wishing their dad would have a change of heart and come along.

I can’t remember the exact details, but something occurred in his father’s life that made him put his bourbon on the shelf and start going to church. The bourbon sat in the same place for the remainder of the man’s life, a symbol of a change that brought him greater happiness than the bottle ever could. When his father passed away, the man at the pulpit took the bourbon and placed it on a shelf in his own home to remind him of his father and the decision to never open it again.
