Annette Lawrence's series "Ahkelo's Walk" is a deeply personal project, centered around collective remembrance and healing. In March 2021, Annette Lawrence turned her simple routine of daily walks into a memorial to honor her late nephew Lawrence (Ahkelo) Wade Kimbrough (September 28, 2000 – February 14, 2021). Friends, family, and Lawrence collectively walked 7,444 miles, one mile for the 20 years, 4 months, and 14 days of Ahkelo’s life. Lawrence carefully recorded each mile into various charts, data that she then transformed into drawings—mirroring and distorting the lines, numbers, and letters into the abstracted forms that appear in her paintings. In her work, Lawrence uses close-up images of Ahkelo’s most colorful clothes. The abstract numbers and brightly hued circular portals and planets transport the viewer to an otherworldly place and memorialize Ahkelo’s vibrancy.

Veronica Jackson’s "BLACKTIVISTS" series consist of twelve silkscreened portraits that depict thirteen relatively unknown and overlooked Black women activists. Most of these women were born during the time of enslavement in the United States, and some were enslaved at birth. Yet despite or because of their social circumstances, they championed human rights for African Americans and women at a time when their own racialized and gendered existence remained in jeopardy.

The technique of screen printing black ink on black paper symbolizes invisibility, devaluation, and ignorance about Black women’s stories. The silkscreen prints on white paper with silver ink elevate each woman’s visibility, rendering each portrait more legible than their counterpart in black. In white, these women’s visages are apparent, evident, and clear. One does not have to search to see their likeness.

✨Free Guided Tours of "Marks of Memory"!✨

Join exhibition curator Samantha Meyer for a tour of "Marks of Memory." Participants will receive an hour long explanation of the artwork and themes in the exhibition as well as in depth information about the artists' processes.

Last but certainly not least for our introductions of artists in our current exhibition, LaRissa Rogers!

Rogers is a multidisciplinary artist whose work investigates how personal and shared memory and history impact the perpetual evolution of cultural identity formation and placemaking. Research and material become the entry point of broader social-political interrogations, often asking the question, who and what survives?

She has exhibited at Documenta 15 (Germany), Weserburg Museum (Germany), Lilley Museum (NV), the Wattis Institute of Contemporary Art (CA), the California Museum of Photography (CA), the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art (VA), Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (CA) among others.

She received the Visual Arts fellowship at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (2022) and the Fine Arts Work Center Fellowship (2023-2024). Among these Rogers also held several residencies. She has been featured in The New York Times, Harper's Bazaar Japan, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, ARTnews, ARTSY, New American Paintings, Boston Art Review, and The Boston Globe.

Rogers received her Master of Fine Arts from the University of California, Los Angeles, and her bachelor’s degree in fine arts from Virginia Commonwealth University. Rogers is a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor and Head of Sculpture at the University of Virginia.

Next in line for artist introductions from our current exhibit "Marks of Memory"... Annette Lawrence!

Annette Lawrence’s recent work, Ahkelo's Walk, involves counting days by walking miles. It is a natural extension of her practice of recording everyday occurrences in drawings, paintings, and installations. Like her other works, this project reflects her commitment to finding meaning and beauty in what life brings.

Lawrence’s work has been widely exhibited and is held in museums, and private collections including The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, The Dallas Museum of Art, The Rachofsky Collection, the Art Collection of the Dallas Cowboys and more!

Lawrence received a BFA from The Hartford Art School and an MFA from The Maryland Institute College of Art. Lawrence now serves as Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Art and Art History at UNC-Chapel Hill. Lawrence divides her time between North Carolina and Georgia, where she is developing an artist residency called West Orchid.

✨ We are excited to introduce each of the three amazing artists exhibiting in "Marks of Memory", starting with Veronica Jackson. ✨

Jackson creates symbolic remembrance work that honors and illuminates Black women who mark, claim, and take up space. Her multi-decade interpretive exhibit design and architecture careers form the foundation of her multidisciplinary and oftentimes autobiographical visual art practice. She transforms complex stories into accessible visual messages using familiar objects in unexpected ways. Her work addresses a core internal query: What does it mean to be invisible and how does that designation shape her identity and sense of self?

She has exhibited in group and solo shows including NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, NYC; Verge Center for the Arts, Sacramento, CA; JSAAHC, PVCC, and UVA all in Charlottesville, VA; Riverviews Artspace, Lynchburg, VA; and recent solo shows at VisArts and the Daura Museum of Art, University of Lynchburg. Her work resides in collections of private individuals, as well as the Virginia Humanities, Charlottesville and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond. Jackson holds an MA in Visual & Critical Studies from CCA, San Francisco and a BS in Architecture from UVA, Charlottesville. She currently lives in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Central Virginia.

We are also excited to announce that Veronica Jackson is the Fall 2026 Visiting Artist, hosted by the Center for Studying Structures of Race and Olin Hall Galleries. in conversation "Marks of Memory," Jackson will lead five workshop sessions with the two sections of Dr. Jesse Bucher’s INQ 300 class where she is working with students to create their own silkscreened broadside posters in response to the course’s investigation of how memory about the past gets constructed, challenged, and reconfigured through public events and art.
