We are excited to be back on campus and thrilled to announce our upcoming fall exhibition, "Marks of Memory", on view September 11 through December 6, 2026.

"Marks of Memory" examines time, data, ancestry, and personal experience through the work of three contemporary artists—Veronica Jackson, Annette Lawrence, and LaRissa Rogers—who question what stories get told, who gets remembered, and what data gets counted and recorded. Highlighting printmaking and patterning as physical processes and systems of communication, this exhibition explores how personal and collective histories are remembered, preserved, and disseminated.

✨Permanent Collection Spotlight: John Margolies's "Patsy the Whale and Christie's Restaurant Sign"✨

Patsy the Whale at West Main Mini Golf, Hyannis Port, Massachusetts (1984) and Christie’s Restaurant Sign (Crayfish w/ Pistol), Houston, Texas (1983) are photographs from the Roadside America Photograph Archive taken by John Margolies. In 1972, Margolies set off down the road taking pictures of these attractions. He wanted to capture these buildings before they were destroyed and forgotten. Margolies would drive for weeks at a time in the fall or early spring where there were not many tourists. He shot in color with a 35 mm Canon FT. Margolies project went on until 2008 and resulted in 11,710 photos.

Roanoke College has 191 prints from John Margolies. You can find some of his photographs around campus like the second floor of Fintel Library and the top floor of the Colket Center.
