Art-learning moments are so gratifying. Pre-school students had a lesson today on identifying the letters in their names as well as safety tips on how to use markers correctly. Moments before this photo, I demonstrated how to fill in shapes so the white space disappears. There was a small gasp and an, "Ooooh!" as she discovered she could do it too. Tiny moments like these make my day. Every small discovery is new and exciting. I love it.

ANNOUNCEMENT!

Would your child like to enter this year's annual Fire Prevention Poster Contest? Last year, our school was proudly represented by three amazing artists. To save in-class time, I would like to ask interested students to work from home on a fire safety poster and submit them to me by Thursday, October 1st. I can provide students with one 11x14 piece of white construction paper for the project unless the student would like to work on something personally purchased like posterboard. I can provide some limited art supplies for coloring too if the supplies can be returned to school when complete.

Winners are selected by our local fire department. In the past, anyone chosen as a winner have been invited to come with their families to join firefighter volunteers and RCPS Staff for a special celebration at the firehouse. There is a catered meal as well as prizes for winning artists.

If you are interested in your child participating, please click the link below to read about the THEME for this year's fire safety. Each poster should closely follow the special theme, use big, bold words, colors, and drawings. I am always willing to visit with students and parents about details or give tips and pointers for making their art. If you have any questions, please let me know!

Check it out! It took a week of collecting data, but our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders have spoken! At the end of each art class, I asked students to write down one thing they desperately wanted to do in art this school year if they could just snap their fingers and have their wishes granted. Every word in this Word Cloud represents a student. The largest words are shared ideas and were repeated the most. I received some very heartfelt wishes and while I won't be able to grant them all, I have been super excited to see what our students really want to do this school year. Here's to wishes coming true!

Well its that time of year again. Art specials began today and our first graders spent some time drawing self portraits. I use these portraits as a pre-assessment tool to measure how much they grow over the school year. At the end of the year, they will draw another. We will be able to compare and contrast our drawings to see how much they have grown.
