On this day in 1912, J. S. Rascoe signed an agreement for one share of stock in an interurban railway planned from Dallas to Greenville, built by The Eastern Texas Traction Company.

Interurban railways were electric railways that were already popular throughout the Dallas, Terrell, and Denton areas.

Unfortunately, by 1920, competition from automobiles, spurred on by government subsidies for paved highways, started the long decline of the industry. The Eastern Texas Traction Company soon ran out of funds and the line was never completed.

What if family worked differently?

In ancestral Caddo society, identity followed the mother’s line.

Children belonged to their mother’s clan. Homes were centered around her family. In many cases, men joined the woman’s household after marriage.

That structure shaped daily life, leadership, and the continuity of community.

Today, Caddo women continue to carry and express culture in ways that connect past and present.

During Women’s History Month, it’s worth remembering that systems like this existed here, in what is now Texas, long before modern assumptions about family took hold.

Not a footnote. A foundation.

On this day in 2004, Rockwall County proclaimed March 13th as "Zaner Benetin Day". Zaner Benetin, formerly Zaner Robison, was born that day in 1914. Today would be her 112th birthday.

Zaner Robison and her husband Bob Robison together ran one of Royse City's earliest newspapers, The Royse City American, from 1942-1973.

It was in 1973 that Zaner and her husband helped found the Royse City Chamber of Commerce, and in 1980 that Mrs. Robison became the first female mayor of Royse City, serving until 1982. During that time she helped to preserve our beloved Calaboose Jail.

We have much to thank Zaner Robison for, having served the city for 55 years 1941-1996. Happy birthday to her!

On this day in 1943, a letter was written to Mrs. J. W. Terrell concerning her son, W. J. Terrell who was serving overseas during WWII.

Mrs. J. W. Terrell was Florence Willie Terrell, Daughter-in-law of Robert A. Terrell, namesake of Terrell, TX!

Some may not know this, but the Terrell family has roots here in Royse City!
