What an incredible Summer of Steam it's been! As we reflect on an unforgettable season for Norfolk & Western 611, we also want to recognize another historic chapter that came to a close today.
Our friends at the Union Pacific Railroad return Big Boy No. 4014 home to Cheyenne, Wyoming, following one of the most highly anticipated steam tours in recent memory. The cross-country journey took the world's largest operating steam locomotive across territory many never imagined it would see including a remarkable assault on the legendary Allegheny Grade and a memorable run through the world-famous Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania.
Moving and operating a steam locomotive of this size across today's railroad network is an extraordinary accomplishment that requires countless hours of planning, coordination, mechanical expertise, and cooperation between railroaders across the country.
A sincere thank you to our friends at Norfolk Southern for making it possible for so many on the East Coast to experience Big Boy in action. Seeing 4014 thunder across NS rails created memories that will last a lifetime for thousands of railfans, families and the next generation of steam lovers.
Congratulations to Union Pacific's Heritage Operations Team and Norfolk Southern on successfully completing this monumental journey. Your dedication to preserving and sharing railroad history continues to inspire all of us in the preservation community.
Here's to more incredible partnerships that make these historic steam moments possible! 🚂🇺🇸
