The Academy of Music was located at 410-414 Salem Avenue S.W. (betweeen 4th and 5th Streets) in Roanoke, Virginia. This photograph was taken between 1930 and 1945. The Academy of Music opened October 7, 1892, and was one of the most ornate structures in Roanoke. However, through the years the building fell into neglect, and it was demolished in 1953 to the regret of many.

Save the date! Our Historic Walking Tour returns to Evergreen Burial Park on Sunday, October 11 at 2:00 PM. For two decades, this free, family-friendly event has brought Roanoke's history to life with living history actors sharing first-person stories of the notable individuals who rest within our grounds.

All who enjoy local history, a pleasant autumn stroll, and live theater are welcome. The tour begins at the flagpole, 1307 Summit Avenue SW, Roanoke, VA.

October starts tomorrow, which means History is Served is happening soon! 🍽️📚

Our biggest fundraiser of the year is coming up Thursday, October 29, at Hotel Roanoke. Join us for dinner, a special presentation by Gabe Neville, and an evening of silent and live auctions, all in support of the Historical Society of Western Virginia.

Join us Tuesday, September 29, at 7pm for an evening with author Wyatt Golden, who will explore the life of Colonel Charles Lynch and the art of biography in his lecture, “A Dutch Agriculturalist, a Virginia Patriot, and the Value of Biography.”
