The Ridgefield Historical Society meets our mission by the growth and sharing of our expansive collections; and through a wide range of programs and events which highlight our heritage and keep it alive and well. As of March 2022, we are open to visitors on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoons from 1:00pm to 5:00pm. We look forward to expanding these hours as the days lengthen, the temperatures rise, and the shadow of the pandemic continues to lift.

Thanks to those stalwarts who dared to leave the comforts of home on Sunday and soak up a little history at the Peter Parley Schoolhouse. If you were students of yesteryear, we’d acknowledge you all with “Rewards of Merit" — prized tokens given out by teachers in early one-room schoolhouses recognizing students for exceptional behavior, diligence, and academic success. Consider yourselves bestowed!

The Parley Schoolhouse is next open for visitors on Sunday, Oct. 25, from 1-4pm. It will be our last open house of the season and since it’s so close to Halloween, we’ll have treats for visitors in costumes. ridgefieldhistoricalsociety.org

When the Peter Parley/West Lane District Schoolhouse has its Sunday, Sept. 25, open house, visitors will see the new outhouse, built as part of the Gateway Project to enhance the three town-owned triangles along Route 35.

Mike Sturges (left) was hanging the door, complete with half-moon, when Town Historian and schoolhouse caretaker Jack Sanders stopped by. (The outhouse building will eventually contain a composting toilet/facility.)

Visit the schoolhouse this Sunday from 1:00-4:00 p.m.

HAPPY LABOR DAY!
Men who helped build “modern” Ridgefield: Many immigrants came to town around the turn of the 20th Century to build and work on the great estates and to later build the water and sewer systems. They organized as the Hod Carriers’ Building and Common Laborers’ Union # 316 in April, 1916, with Colombo Franceschini as their president.
The union charter and pictures of the membership are part of the Ridgefield Historical Society Collection; this picture is from the 1920s. –Gift of Thomas Mitchell. ridgefieldhistoricalsociety.org
