Later this month we are introducing five fantastic new exhibitions at the Rehoboth Art League, including Beyond the Walls, works from the Delaware Prison Arts Program!

The Delaware Department of Correction Prison Arts Program provides meaningful opportunities for incarcerated individuals to develop artistic, technical, and vocational skills through structured arts education. More than simply learning to create art, participants build discipline, patience, problem-solving abilities, and confidence while working toward personal and professional growth. Through hands-on instruction, students are encouraged to challenge themselves creatively, explore new techniques, and develop a strong work ethic in a supportive learning environment.

Displayed at the Rehoboth Art League on the Homestead’s back porch are several traditional mortar and pestles representing an important part of Nanticoke life. The Nanticokes, who inhabited this land before its first property owner, Peter Marsh, used these gum-wood tools to grind corn, coffee, and medicinal herbs.

Each mortar was carefully crafted from a gum log, using an axe, hand tools, and fire to hollow out the cavity. The importance of corn processing to Nanticoke life is reflected even today - the mortar and pestle are featured on the Nanticoke Indians Association flag as a symbol of their heritage and way of life.

Take a moment to see these remarkable pieces of history on your next visit to the Homestead. Learn more about the history of Nanticoke life in coastal Delaware with a visit to our current Homestead exhibition, “From Agriculture to Art: A History of the Rehoboth Art League,” on display through September 20.

Throwback Thursday to 1952! 📸🌊⛱️

Step back in time with the Rehoboth Art League’s Archive Collection and take a look at Rehoboth Beach as it appeared more than 70 years ago. These photographs, scanned from original Kodak slides, offer a glimpse into the scenery and character of the Rehoboth Beach area in 1952.

Founded in 1938, the Rehoboth Art League has preserved decades of local history through its collections of artwork, photographs, and archival materials. Each piece helps tell the story of our community and how it has changed over the years.
