Today, we honor Juneteenth by reflecting on freedom, resilience, and the stories that shape our history.

Featured here is artwork by Dane Tilghman, whose work celebrates the richness of African American life and culture through powerful depictions of everyday people. Through art, we preserve stories, inspire conversation, and foster understanding across generations.

🎉 On this day 88 years ago, in 1938, the Rehoboth Art League was officially founded!

Thanks to our abundant archival art collection and documented photographs, we have images from that very day for you to view here. (Although slides 2 and 7 document the process of moving the Paynter Studio in February 1938.)

We have come a long way since that day; however, the fundamental mission of the Art League has not changed all that much: to lead in sponsoring art exhibitions, education, and other programs that inspire all community members to embrace the lifelong value of art.

We would like to thank the countless artists, members, donors, volunteers, staff, students, and visitors who have contributed to the Rehoboth Art League over the past 88 years. Your support, creativity, and dedication have helped shape our organization into what it is today.

Consider donating to the Rehoboth Art League on this celebratory day to help keep our mission alive for generations to come! https://www.rehobothartleague.org/support/donate/

The Rehoboth Art League celebrates Pride Month by shining a light on LGBTQ artists in our Fine Art Collection and are pleased to recognize the serene work of Julie Baxendell.

After graduating from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Julie Baxendell (1939-2009) built a career as a graphic designer, supporting her wife and their three children through her work. Although she did not begin painting until the age of 62, her passion for art quickly flourished, resulting in hundreds of watercolor paintings over the course of her life.

A founding member of both the Rehoboth Art League’s Artists’ Exchange and the Delaware Watercolor Society, Baxendell became known for her luminous watercolors, often inspired by her favorite subject - light reflected on water. Her work captured moments of beauty, tranquility, and connection to the natural world.

Deeply loved by her community, Baxendell’s impact extended far beyond her artwork. Shortly before her passing in 2009, friends and neighbors organized a polar plunge fundraiser to help cover her medical expenses - a testament to the affection and admiration she inspired throughout her life.

The Rehoboth Art League will hold its 76th annual Cottage Tour, a two-day, self-paced event highlighting local design and architecture, on Tuesday, July 7 and Wednesday, July 8 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tickets are on sale now on the Art League’s website for $40, offering access to six private residences in Rehoboth and to the Homestead Showhouse on the RAL campus.

The homes featured on this year’s tour showcase a wide array of design styles, from a classic Rehoboth Beach cottage to a historically significant estate to an eclectically designed new build. Each of the six private residences provides a different view of the landscape, architecture, and interior design of the Rehoboth Beach area.

This year’s featured Cottage Tour artist, Delaware-based oil painter Shawn Faust, painted each of the homes on the tour. His paintings, which will be given to the homeowners, will be displayed in the Cottage Tour event program booklet that serves as patrons’ ticket for the event.

Tickets can be purchased online at RehobothArtLeague.org between now and July 8th. All tickets purchased online must be picked up from the Art League’s gallery at 12 Dodds Lane on or after June 30; patrons will not be granted entry to the home without a physical event booklet.

"Peace and good humor must be maintained around this fountain at all times.” This final note on installation instructions for the beloved “Showers” fountain here at the Rehoboth Art League campus encapsulates artist Gary Hughes’ whimsical approach to creativity. And with the help of a transformative gift from his wife, Ellen Roney Hughes, the Showers sculpture has emerged on campus this spring with a fresh setting and new plantings.

As part of the upgrades made to the fountain’s welcome area, greeting all who arrive at the art league, the bronze sculpture was transported to a foundry in Philadelphia for a complete cleaning and replumbing of its inner workings. Meanwhile, a design was mapped to keep the existing footprint of the fountain area and improve its longevity with brick and slate finishes, which compliment other campus materials. Native plantings, installed by our Delaware Master Naturalist volunteers, completed the look.

Plan your visit to the freshly renovated “Showers” fountain, and if you’re interested in learning more about what transformative gifts can do for the Rehoboth Art League, contact our development team at [email protected]

Learn to paint Liminal Spaces! Liminal Spaces are transition places, such as Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks, showing both café and the street. They give the artist an opportunity to explore interiors, landscapes, still life or their imagination.
