Red Springs Artspace presents this month’s “Expanding into the World” showcase—one U.S. artist each month on Artsy.

Carolyn Stevenson paints intuitively, allowing layers of acrylic — color, texture, gesture, and atmosphere — to develop in conversation with one another. Faces and forms appear, dissolve, and reorganize. What looks like weather can become a face; what looks like a face can return to weather.

The work asks whether an image can hold experience before language arrives. Meditation, nature, and a lifelong curiosity about perception and memory inform that inquiry. “The First Language” names the threshold where seeing precedes words.

Red Springs Artspace presents “Between the Lines,” a solo exhibition by award-winning Lumbee artist Karina McMillan.

Working primarily in ballpoint pen, acrylic, and mixed media, McMillan builds recent portraits and mixed-media works through dense, deliberate mark-making. Historical engraving and Old Master print traditions meet contemporary Native experience in faces, garments, and symbolic details that reward close looking.

McMillan has exhibited at the Gregg Museum of Art & Design, the Museum of the Southeast American Indian, Artfields, and Red Springs Artspace.

Exhibition Dates:
October 18 – November 30

Opening Reception:
Sunday, November 1 · 2–5 p.m.
