Congratulations to Ruth Armitage, recipient of Award XVIII for “Blackest of Blues,” a 20 × 26 in mixed-media work on Yupo. A compelling and memorable award-winning piece. Ruth is an NWS Signature Member.

The 106th International Open Exhibition is the flagship exhibition of the National Watercolor Society. Selected from a highly competitive international field, this year’s exhibition brings together 95 paintings representing the creativity, diversity, and excellence of contemporary watermedia. We are especially proud that 42% of the accepted artists are Associate Members, underscoring that artistic vision and excellence remain the defining criteria for selection.

Our sincere thanks to Jurors of Selection Ratindra Das, Robbie Laird, and Gale Webb for their dedication and thoughtful evaluation of the entries, and to Juror of Awards Stephen Quiller for selecting this year’s award recipients.

Congratulations again to Ruth Armitage and to all of the artists included in the 2026 NWS 106th International Open Exhibition.

Thank you to everyone who came out on Sunday for Kindra Crick’s artist talk on the interplay between art and science that shapes her work in Nocturnal Worlds.

The audience was engaged and curious, and their thoughtful questions about sleep, dreams, and personal experiences with insomnia made for a lively conversation.

Dreams were added to the Dream Anthology after the talk. Share a piece of your own nocturnal world and read the dreams of our community until the show closes.

Congratulations to the collector of ‘Into that World Inverted,’ which found a home after the talk!

On view through Sunday, Nov. 1st
Wed to Sat 11 am to 5:30 pm

Join us ✨this Sunday, October 18th, for an Artist Talk with Kindra Crick, whose exhibition Nocturnal Worlds is currently on view. Kindra Crick | Art

Crick will share her creative process, from recording her own brainwaves during sleep and keeping a dream diary to transforming that data and her nighttime experiences into layered mixed-media paintings and installations. Each night when we fall asleep, we lose consciousness while our brains remain remarkably active. During deep sleep, neurons across the cortex fire together in synchrony, producing slow delta waves.

During REM sleep, brain activity resembles wakefulness while our bodies remain largely paralyzed, our eyes darting beneath closed lids.

In Nocturnal Worlds, Crick explores these mysterious states alongside the restless experience of insomnia, combining scientific data with the deeply personal experience of sleep and dreams. Visitors can also explore an artist book on lucid dreaming and contribute their own dreams to a collective Dream Anthology.

Come discover how science, art, and the strange rhythms of the night intertwine. You might leave seeing your own nocturnal world and dreams in a new light.

Kindra Crick works at the intersection of art and neuroscience, creating dynamic installations and intricate, layered mixed-media works informed by scientific research and collaborations with scientists.
Her work is held in collections including the Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, England, Princeton University, and the Jordan Schnitzer Collection. Based in Portland, Crick brings her curiosity about the natural world and the human mind into both her art and dailylife.

This event is free, open to the public, all ages, and ADA accessible. Sunday parking is free until 1pm.

Nocturnal Worlds continues through Sunday, November 1st.

OPENING TONIGHT 5-8pm for First Thursday, October 1!

Join us for Nocturnal Worlds, Kindra Crick’s first solo exhibition at the gallery. Combining neuroscience and art, Crick’s exhibition explores deep sleep, dreams, and insomnia.

Sleep and memory have fascinated Crick for more than a decade. In February 2024, she began sleeping with a portable EEG to track her brainwaves while keeping a sleep diary documenting dreams, ruminations, and the daily variables that shape each night. She also worked with researchers studying circadian rhythms and the claustrum, a brain region thought to play a key role in synchronizing slow-wave activity.

Crick transforms over a year’s worth of personal brainwave recordings and sleep journals into paintings, prints and installations. Rhythmic wave patterns evoke deep sleep, while vivid colors and imagery give form to dreams. Moths swarm across the work as a metaphor for the restless thoughts of insomnia. The work pairs data with subjective experience to map the mind’s elusive inner landscapes.
