Clay Art Center proudly announces its 70th Anniversary, marking seven decades of creativity, education, and community impact in the ceramic arts!

Founded in 1957 by visionary ceramic artists Katherine Choy and Henry Okamoto, Clay Art Center began as an artists’ collective built on bold ideas and radical inclusivity. Today, Clay Art Center stands as one of the nation’s most respected ceramic arts organizations, celebrating not only 70 years since its founding, but also 20 years as a nonprofit, a transformation that expanded its reach and deepened its mission. Clay Art Center’s 70th Anniversary is not only a celebration of the past — it is a testament to how Choy and Okamoto’s legacy lives on through every artist, student, and community member who walks through our doors.

Throughout 2027, Clay Art Center will present a series of exhibitions and events that illuminate our history, celebrate our community, and honor the artists who shaped our story, including:

-On Solid Ground: 70 Years of Clay Art Center — Featuring archival materials, historic works by Choy and Okamoto, and stories of the artists who built our legacy.
-Side By Side: Invitational Tile Exhibition — Showcasing over 150 artists nationwide that are part of the Clay Art Center community.

Handled With Care is on view now!

Clay Art Center presents the fourth annual Functional Fall exhibition, guest juried by former Artists-in-Residence Lindsay Scypta and Mike Stumbras.

Featuring handmade ceramic works by 28 artists from 14 states, Handled With Care celebrates the tactile and visual possibilities of clay through surface, decoration, pattern, carving, stamping, glaze, luster, and more. These small- to medium-scale works invite us to slow down, look closely, and connect through touch and detail.

Join us for an Opening Reception on Saturday, September 19 from 5-7:00 PM in the gallery. Enjoy light refreshments and be there for the announcement of the Juror’s Prize.

Public Art at Clay Art Center

Over the summer, our Community Arts team has been busy working on a large-scale mosaic destined for installation in a regional school. We can’t wait to share the final results, but in the meantime, here’s a sneak peek of the progress. We worked with middle to high school students on making the incredible tiles that make up the entire project, guided by our Community Arts instructors. The big reveal is scheduled for 2027, so watch this space!

This year, we are excited to share that bus transportation for high-school students is available from the Carver Center to Clay Art Center!
