• About 20,000 sandhill cranes use the lake at Whitewater Draw as their nighttime roost, October through March (Arizona Game and Fish).
• At sunrise they fly out to farm fields across the Sulphur Springs Valley to feed, and they are back on the water before noon (Arizona Game and Fish).

HOW TO GET THERE
From AZ-80 about 5 miles south of Tombstone, take Davis Road east, then turn right on Coffman Road and go about 2.5 miles to the entrance, near McNeal (Arizona Game and Fish).

LITTLE-KNOWN
• According to local history, two men built a service station here in 1951, expecting a dam on the Colorado River at Bridge Canyon. The dam was never built, and Route 66 traffic kept the business going (Legends of America).
• The Frontier Motel is one of the Route 66 properties helped by the National Park Service's Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program (National Park Service).

HOW TO GET THERE
Truxton sits on the long stretch of Route 66 between Seligman and Kingman.

• Tortilla Flat began as a stop for freight haulers on the road built to supply construction of Roosevelt Dam, starting in 1904 (Lombardi, 1996).
• It is the last surviving stagecoach stop along the Apache Trail (Lombardi, 1996).
• The bar stools in the Superstition Saloon are real saddles.

A steel dam older than Route 66, and the town that rebuilt itself in stone. All in this caption.

Ash Fork, Arizona is home to the first large, all-steel fixed dam, built for the Santa Fe Railway in 1898.

LITTLE-KNOWN
• It was one of only three all-steel fixed dams built in the United States (Library of Congress, HAER AZ-90).
• 46 feet high, 184 feet of steel, twenty-four triangular steel frames (HAER).
• Before the dam, the railroad hauled up to 90,000 gallons of water a day by tank car (HAER).
• It sits in Johnson's Canyon, about 4 miles east of Ash Fork, and is on the National Register of Historic Places (HAER).
• Ash Fork burned in 1893 and was rebuilt in its own flagstone (Arizona House Resolution 2001).

RESPECT
The dam sits in the national forest. Admire it, leave it as you found it.

The lake is closed during the drawdown (Tonto National Forest alert runs to Feb. 28, 2027). Tortilla Flat is open.

HOW TO GET THERE
State Route 88, the Apache Trail, northeast of Apache Junction. The road stays open past the lake.

Stay off the closed shoreline and boat ramps, and pack out what you pack in.

• U.S. Route 66 was established November 11, 1926, so it turns 100 this November (BLM).

The gold nobody could see from the surface, a rock spire a federal geologist said looks nothing like an elephant's tooth, and the hotel that came back after a fire. All in this caption.

Oatman, Arizona was built on gold, and the miners found it 465 feet underground.

LITTLE-KNOWN
• In March 1915 a crosscut 465 feet down went through 25 feet of ore, and by the end of 1916 an ore body estimated at about $6,000,000 in gold had been blocked out (USGS Bulletin 743, 1923).
• The mining company sold stock at 25 cents a share in 1914 (USGS Bulletin 743, 1923).
• The white rock spire above town is called the Elephant's Tooth, and the 1923 federal report says it has "no real resemblance" to an elephant's (USGS Bulletin 743, 1923).
• The Oatman Hotel was built in 1902 and rebuilt in 1924 after a fire (National Park Service).

WHEN TO GO
The Bureau of Land Management says the Route 66 back country byway is open all year, and the best time to visit is October through April (BLM).

HOW TO GET THERE
The old road to Oatman is narrow and winding, with steep grades and limited guardrails (BLM, 2026).

RESPECT
The burros are protected by federal law (Wild Horse and Burro Act of 1971). Give them room.
