Kokopelli has been walking across pottery like this for a thousand years.

Cedar Mesa Pottery, hand painted, signed on the bottom by the Native American artist who made it. The Certificate of Native American Authenticity comes in the box.

The flute player shows up in rock art all over the Southwest. Nobody agrees on exactly what he means, and that is part of why he lasted.

Saguaros grow in exactly one desert on earth, and you are looking at it.

πŸ“ Saguaro National Park, outside Tucson.

They do not grow wild anywhere but the Sonoran. Not in Texas, not in New Mexico, not in the movies that keep putting them there. Some of the ones standing in this frame were here before Arizona was a state.

Find your town on this one.

The Arizona Places mug puts the names right on the side. The famous ones and the ones you only know if you have driven through them.

Everybody does the same thing when they pick it up. They look for home first, then they look for the town nobody has heard of.

Which name are you looking for? πŸ‘‡

Seven thousand feet is a different Arizona.

πŸ“ Woods Canyon Lake, up on the Mogollon Rim.

The lake sits around 7,500 feet. On the same August afternoon it can run thirty degrees cooler than the Valley floor. The Rim is a large part of how Phoenix gets through summer.

Rim country, what is the first lake your family ever camped at up there? πŸ‘‡

Everybody has the one mug. Swipe and find yours.

Grand Canyon State, rattlesnake, petroglyph, the state map, the roadrunner. Same shelf, five completely different opinions about what Arizona looks like.

The map one is the sleeper. People stand there finding their exit off the 10.

Which is you? Answer by number. πŸ‘‡

People drive up here for the view. The quiet is what keeps them.

πŸ“ Dobbins Lookout, South Mountain Park, Phoenix.

South Mountain is one of the largest municipal parks in the country, roughly 16,000 acres sitting inside city limits. Most of the people living under it have never been to the top.

Phoenix, when did you last drive up? πŸ‘‡

In 1910 Globe built a jail for a tough town, and built it out of concrete because wood was not going to hold.

It held prisoners until 1981. An inmate named Kingsley Olds died at a window here in 1911, and whoever was responsible was never caught. The building is a museum now. It keeps what happened here instead of hiding from it.

HOW TO GET THERE
From Phoenix, US-60 east about 90 miles, roughly an hour and forty-five. The 1910 jail sits in downtown Globe beside the old county courthouse.

TIPS
The doors open to the public the second Saturday of the month, and tours run other days by appointment. Check current hours before you drive out. Look for the prisoner etchings, decades of names and dates scratched into the concrete.

DID YOU KNOW?
Seventy-one years of prisoners came through here, and the writing they left behind is still on the walls.

Small thing. Gets used constantly.

Sunset art down one side, a saguaro, the state name, and a business end that actually works. Drawer, keyring, or cooler bag, and it quietly outlasts almost everything else in the house.

Ten years from now it will still be around and you will have forgotten where it came from.

Somebody signed the back of this one by hand.

Doris Dils. It is a Cedar Mesa Pottery ornament, and that signature is on the underside, with the Certificate of Native American Authenticity in the box.

Ornaments are the thing people buy in September and forget they bought until December. Then it is the good one on the tree.

Do you buy ornaments on trips, or only at home? πŸ‘‡

The frame is the souvenir. The photo is yours.

Four by six, Arizona across the top, and the whole state painted around the opening. Hummingbird, quail, coyote, red rock, saguaro. The card in it now is the sample. Your picture from the trip goes there instead.

People come back from Arizona with a thousand photos and print none of them.
