Our new exhibit “12 Fascinating Objects from the Mariposa Collection” gets up close and personal with some of our most intriguing and at times even challenging pieces.
From fishing spears from the Central Highlands of Vietnam to a “Chimera” headdress from the Middle East…
Come see them in all their splendor and find out about cultures, festivals, and traditions you might never have heard about before! 🌎 🏛️🏮🪅

The Mariposa Museum is home to a profusion of interesting artifacts from a variety of cultures all over the world… more than what we can feature in our collection cases at any given time! Enjoy this opportunity to get up close and personal with 12 of the most unique objects stored in the depths of the Mariposa and the stories behind them: from an Ethiopian Magic Healing Scroll to a Romanian hand embroidered vest, and other intriguing items!

Join us this Saturday October 3rd at 3 pm for an engaging conversation with one of Mariposa Museum’s current featured artist Rosemary Mack.
The exhibition, The Art of Whimsy, revels in their shared joy of curiosity, the charm of absurdity, and the delight of artistic daydreams through a vibrant mix of sculpture, graphic work featuring game boards, dolls, dioramas and more.
What is considered whimsical is most certainly subjective. It is driven more by feeling than by logic. We might associate whimsy with childlike wonder, imagination, and dreamlike possibilities, but it can also be found in the unexpected, the humorous, and even the strange. There’s an innocence attached to whimsy that many seem to long to go back to. Others might consider it shallow or without consequence. But in this ever-changing era of disconnection, uniformity, uncertainty and constant questioning, we can all benefit from having a little more of the unbearable lightness of whimsy in our lives.

This promises to be an enticing discussion led by Mariposa Museum, Executive Director, Miriam Carter.

October Object of the Month:
Ferris Wheel Crank Toy
Oaxaca, Mexico

Calacas/Calaveras, or skulls, are commonly used during the holiday known as Día de los Mu***os, or the Day of the Dead. This is a Mexican holiday in which both life and death are honored with colorful flowers, clothing, decorations, and a variety of foods and drinks, all in remembrance of those who have passed away.
Ancient Aztec traditions have been very important in shaping this holiday. From these traditions comes the idea that death is a natural part of life, which is truly embraced by many Mexicans. It is something to celebrate rather than fear.
As objects associated with Día de los Mu***os, calacas show how fun and humor do not stop with death. Some are shown dancing, playing sports, traveling, and doing so much more. They represent the idea that loved ones who have passed away can continue enjoying the things they did in life, such as riding a Ferris wheel, for example.

The Peterborough International Affairs Forum (PIAF) will host a discussion on “The Decline of America’s Alliances?” on Thursday, Oct. 1 at the Mariposa Museum. The program will begin at 7 p.m.

Bob Beck, a member of the PIAF steering committee, said the theme is timely because “the perilous state of America’s partnerships across the globe is one of the most profound consequences of the current U.S. administration’s foreign policy.”

Karl Kaiser and Dan Grosz, PIAF committee members from Peterborough, will lead the discussion. Kaiser, senior fellow at the Project on Europe and the Transatlantic Relationship at Harvard’s Kennedy School, will focus on America’s alliance relationships in Europe. Grosz, who lived and worked in China and Southeast Asia, will lead the conversation about U.S. alliances in Asia.

PIAF encourages audience participation. There is no admission but donations are suggested.
