We're incredibly grateful for every person who is helping The Monastery become a place where creativity and community can come together in beautiful ways.

At The Monastery AZ, we believe art is not a luxury. It's necessary part of our everyday lives. It helps us connect, reflect, remember, imagine, and feel more human.

When you visit the gallery, support local artists, share our posts, attend events, or tell someone about the space, you are helping make that belief real.

Thank You! ❤️❤️❤️

Born in Los Angeles, Phoenix-based David Brady is known for his powerful, provocative images of contemporary life and his continuous exploration of the figure through collage, assemblage, oil, and drawing. His recently published graphic memoir, “Into the Tunnel,” chronicles his experience being treated for, and as a survivor of Stage 3 throat cancer.

David, now five years cancer free, turned to drawing as a way to document and process his own cancer journey. His sketches became both personal record and connection point, capturing not only his own experience but also the people surrounding it, including fellow patients, medical professionals, friends, family, and the larger community of voices attempting to offer help and support. His work reflects on the noise that often surrounds illness, the complicated ways people show up for one another, and the unexpected relationships formed along the way. These drawings later became part of a book chronicling that journey.

Gaylen Stewart is an art professor and artist, working in oil, watercolor and mixed media. His work explores natural phenomenon, science, mathematical relationships, design, philosophy, his miraculous healing from cancer, and his interaction with God through symbolic imagery and medical documentation.

For Gaylen, a cancer diagnosis in his thirties became part of a much longer artistic exploration of life, the body, and the medical world. After a lump was initially misdiagnosed and went unrecognized for nearly a year, Stewart eventually learned that the cancer had spread into his bloodstream, leading to the removal of 46 lymph nodes. His work emerges from a practice already rooted in questions of life, medicine, vulnerability, and what it means to inhabit a body that can suddenly become unfamiliar.

Starting an art collection does not have to feel intimidating.

We've provide some tips to help you get started....

1. Start with what moves you
You do not need to know everything about art to begin collecting. Pay attention to the pieces that make you pause, feel, remember, or wonder.

2. Set a comfortable budget
Collecting art does not have to start with a major investment. Begin with what feels realistic, whether that is a small original, a print, or a handmade piece.

3. Buy from living artists
When you purchase directly from an artist or local gallery, you are not just taking home artwork. You are supporting someone’s creative practice.

4. Ask about the story
Learning what inspired a piece can deepen your connection to it. Ask the artist or gallery about the process, materials, and meaning behind the work.

5. Let your collection grow slowly
A meaningful collection is built over time. Choose pieces that reflect where you have been, what you value, and what you want to live with every day.

At The Monastery, we love helping people find artwork they feel connected to. Whether you are buying your first piece or slowly growing your collection, we can help you explore styles, learn about the artists, understand pricing, and choose work that feels right for your home, your story, and your budget.
