We are saddened by the recent passing of longtime Arts Center and Penn Yan Art Guild member, Sally Thomas.

Sally loved to paint scenes from her beloved Elk Lake in the Adirondack Park. She was a terrific artist and always a joyful presence.

We share a few of her paintings here in remembrance, along with a Bill Anderson song she loved to quote the past few years:

“It’s a good day to have a good day.”

She will be greatly missed.

Treat your mom to something special this weekend at the Arts Center of Yates County! 💐 Whether you take a stroll through our new exhibit, take a "Mini & Me" painting class, or browse our "Mother's Day Art Sale", there is plenty to do here with mom, grandma, and kiddos on Saturday, May 9th. Dads and grandpas are welcome too, so bring the whole family!! 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

The "Mini & Me" painting class will be upstairs in our classroom from 12-2pm with our wonderful instructor, Crissy Matter McGinness from The Art Studio 126 Main. Paint in pairs to create a joint work of art with you and your "mini"! 🎨🪷 To register, you can visit our website, give us a call or stop by in person.

The "Mother's Day Art Sale" is up now, and will go until all paintings are sold! Buy 1 painting for $35 or 2 for $50. These paintings were generously donated, which means all proceeds go directly into supporting the Arts Center. 🖼💖

We hope to see you on Saturday, and wish you all a very Happy Mother's Day! 💗☺️

A meticulously created ceramic vase by a Penn Yan Academy junior took Best in Show honors at the Arts Center of Yates County’s annual student show this year. Judge Michael Monahan noted that Kalliope Fingar’s creatively constructed vase “was without a doubt a college-level piece of work.”

Fingar’s work was not the only piece to shine in this year’s student show, which features artwork from Penn Yan Academy, Dundee Middle and High School students and middle and high school students from Marcus Whitman. This year’s show also included artwork from students in the Arts Center’s Homeschool Art Program – seven five-week sessions of weekly classes created with a grant from the Lisk Morris Foundation.

As in past years, the student work was “juried” – judged by community members with some arts experience. In addition to Monahan, this year’s judges included Mark Collier from Waxpax Records and Stefan Drobel from Inkpoetry. Collier was “blown away” by the passion and “bravery” of the students in putting their work out for everyone to see. Awards were given to students from each art program in drawing, painting and collage, digital art and photography, and three-dimensional work. Thanks to generous donations from the districts and a couple anonymous donors, student “winners” received cash prizes – enhanced this year by another anonymous donor who matched the school funds.

The student art exhibit will be on display at the Arts Center until Friday, May 1st. Stop by and see the explosion of creativity and talent evident in the work created by these young artists.

Congratulations to all the entrants in this year’s show! Scroll through for a list of this year’s awardees.

Sunrise, stillness, and a glimpse of winter-- where water, ice, and sky meet on Keuka Lake.

Congratulations to Arts Center member Nancy Peeke, winner of first prize for the the 2026 KLA calendar! Look for her beautifully reflective photo featured in February 2026.

Nancy, thank you for sharing this moment of tranquility with us! A reminder of the beauty still waiting for us in the months ahead.

Moments like this remind us how fortunate we are to live near such beauty—and how vital it is to both protect it and share it through art.

This year’s Lifetime Achievement Award goes to Janis Long!

An artist and volunteer, Janis has contributed to the Arts Center for over a decade, and her support has been integral to our growth and continuing success. A talented jewelry artist, she’s served as a board and committee member, workshop instructor, and our top volunteer events coordinator and organizer.

Although Janis recently moved back to Pennsylvania, you can still find her beautiful jewelry at the Arts Center and in our online shop!

Remember, your membership makes a difference. Keep local art and creativity thriving and be part of what keeps the Arts Center growing and inspiring.💛

Congratulations Janis!

Our volunteers mean the world to us!

A big thank you to this year's Volunteers of the Year! (Yes, there are two this year!)

Karen Alden Is the steady heart of our docent desk!

After retiring from the VA and FAA in Oklahoma in 2022, Karen began volunteering at the Arts Center shorty after she and her daughter Jessica moved to Penn Yan. Now, she's the friendly face you'll see at least once a week at our front desk. Karen has a quiet competence and cheerful willingness to lend a hand whenever extra help is needed. Thank you, Karen!

Chris Mays makes kbehind the scenes magic at the Keuka Arts Festival!

Chris Mays is a furniture designer with a studio in Middlesex—Vine Valley Rustics, where he brings his love of the outdoors to his creations, from Adirondack rustic designs to ones with more formal elegance. A featured artist in 2023, Chris jumped on board at the Keuka Arts Festival, tackling site organization and preparation. You'll see him at buzzing about the Festival grounds in a staff cart with his canine co-volunteer, Meg. His help has been integral to the growth and success of the last three festivals. Thank you, Chris!

Join us in appreciating the contributions of Karen and Chris in supporting the mission of the Arts Center: to enrich the lives of Yates County artists, residents, and visitors by providing opportunities to engage with and actively participate in the arts. Comment below, and offer your thanks the next time you see them!
