On Wednesdays, we wind clocks 🕰

Before smartphones, wristwatches, and alarm clocks, families relied on clocks like these to keep daily life running on schedule. But these beautifully crafted timepieces didn’t run on their own, they needed, and still need, weekly winding to keep their pendulums swinging and their chimes ringing.

Each Wednesday, Museum staff must follow a specific procedure to make sure the inner workings of each clock are kept in tip-top shape. Listen closely during your next visit, and you might just hear the same chimes that echoed through these halls when the Flaglers were here!

in 1901, Henry Flagler married Mary Lily Kenan at Liberty Hall, the Kenan family home in Kenansville, North Carolina. Palm Beach has its share of love stories, but few can rival the one written by Henry Flagler and Mary Lily Kenan. It wasn’t just a marriage – it was a meeting of the minds, a confluence of art, ambition, and adoration.

In 1959, Jean Flagler Matthews, Henry Flagler’s granddaughter, saved Whitehall from potential demolition by forming a nonprofit corporation, the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum, and purchasing Whitehall. Guided by its founder, the Museum established the standard of excellence for historic preservation in Palm Beach.

Scenes from the lunettes ✨

Above each of the fifteen doors and windows in the Ballroom is a lunette painting created especially for this room. The paintings were done in the style of two French painters of the 18th century, Jean-Antoine Watteau and François Boucher. Both painters were renowned for their romantic depictions of classical landscapes and pastoral scenes.

The lunette paintings alternate between Watteau-like pastoral scenes, which suggest the pleasures of country life, and Boucher-like scenes with Cupids symbolizing romance. Just as in original 18th-century French paintings of this genre, these scenes reflect the belief that nature, art, and romance were the most refined expressions of life. The paintings here are intended to communicate the sense that Whitehall’s pastoral setting in Palm Beach is ideal for highly cultured pursuits of art and romance.

At first glance, they’re elegant decorative pieces—but these towering torchères tell the story of a home embracing the future.

Stationed in the four corners of the Drawing Room, the 9-foot tall electric lighting fixtures were made by Caldwell and Co. of New York, the premier lighting manufacturers who defined the elite interior spaces of the Gilded Age. The fixtures were custom-built from standardized components for the room and connected to wiring strung under the floor, reflecting the seamless integration of modern technology into Henry Flagler’s grand estate.
