This week’s collection item was a Polished Flint Axe Head! This piece, which comes from a Neolithic (3900-1700 BC) site on the Baltic coast of Denmark, is typical of the axes that would have been used to clear wooded areas during the early development of agriculture in the region! This week’s collection item was the Ear Bones (Bulla and Mastoid Process) of a Baleen Whale, congratulations to Frank Perry on identifying it first! Baleen Whales produce and receive underwater sounds with wavelengths longer than their own massive bodies despite possessing relatively small ear structures (this Bulla is roughly the size of a human fist). Scientists now believe that they may use the resonance of their enormous skulls to “hear” the vibrations of these ultra-low frequencies! Great guesses everyone, try again next week!
