💙💛 DOWN RIGHT PERFECT! 💛💙

October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month, and the Oswego Fire Department is proud to show our support by wearing special awareness shirts throughout the month!

This year, we are especially proud to honor Roger Pullen, a longtime friend and supporter of the Oswego Fire Department, along with all individuals with Down Syndrome and the families, friends, and caregivers who support them. Our duty crew gathered with the Pullen and Gordon families last week to commemorate the occassion. Special thanks to Mayor Corradino and Senator Christopher J. Ryan for joining us!

These shirts represent more than awareness. They celebrate inclusion, acceptance, friendship, and the unique abilities that make every individual special.

Together, we can spread awareness, celebrate differences, and remind everyone that our community is stronger when everyone belongs.

New Donation!

On September 11th, 2026, the John D. Murray Firefighters Museum received an amazing donation by Maureen Wills. The donation is a ceramic mug belonging to George W. Warsop, the first paid Fire Chief of the Oswego City Fire Department (1876 - 1890). Maureen is the 2nd Great Grand-Daughter of Fire Chief Warsop.

George William Warsop was born in Gedney, Lincoln County, England to William and Anna Warsop in 1839. By 1855, he was residing with his family in Oswego, N. Y. In the 1860s he worked as a “Fire Smith” Apprentice (Metal Worker in Training); it is at this time he likely served as a Volunteer Firemen in one of the numerous fire companies in Oswego. In 1872, he was the Treasurer for “Niagara” Company No. 3, and served as the Vice President for that company for the following two years.

When legislation passed making the Oswego City Fire Department a paid occupation on May 19th, 1876, George W. Warsop was elected to be the first paid fire chief on June 6th, and was officially appointed on June 12th, 1876. He served as Oswego’s first paid fire chief until his removal in June 1890. This was his personal mug that he used while chief of the fire department.

Following his service as Fire Chief of Oswego, Former Chief Warsop continued his metal working trade as a Tin Smith from the 1890s through the early 1900s. Oswego Fire Chief George William Warsop passed away at the age of 80 at his home on 5 East Sixth Street in Oswego, N. Y. on October 10th, 1919. He left behind his widow, three sons and one daughter.
