Our museum is located within a 93,000 square foot building, which also includes overnight lodging, banquet and meeting space, and residential apartments. The property encompasses 33 acres including historic gardens and grounds, the Oneida Community Cemetery, and the country's first corporate golf course. The property has two century-old New York State champion trees: a Black Walnut and a Tulip.

A new and improved South Porch! πŸ”¨

Thanks to the generosity of our incredible donors and supporters OCMH was able to complete a MAJOR historic preservation project this summerβ€”the restoration of the historic South Porch!

Thanks to a team of preservation professionals who expertly repaired this porch despite a few curveballs (ahem, a giant steel I-Beam running down the middle), the porch is once again open for people to enjoy the long views of the South Lawn!

From our intern Norah:

"Between 1879 and 1881, the Oneida Community experienced significant changes in their daily lives: returning to common-law marriage by abandoning Complex Marriage and transforming from communal financial pooling into a joint-stock company. These changes, along with the death of their founder John Humphrey Noyes in 1886, rocked the Community. Interestingly, we can trace the impact of these changes through old photographs.

In these photos, the women featured exemplify some of these developments. Photographs taken before the breakup display women with short hair, simple clothing, an absence of jewelryβ€”and, in one photo, in the iconic short dress and pants. These aspects reveal the Community's ideologies; that is, their efforts against vanity and selfishness, and the labor that necessitated modifications to traditional Victorian female clothing.

The photographs dating after the breakup and around the turn-of-the-century depict returns to traditional societal norms and what John Humphrey Noyes may have considered vanity. We see the return of the customary floor-length dress, along with more "worldly" fashion choices such as intricate fabrics, fits, and styles; jewelry and accessories (such as bows and necklaces); longer hair; and dramatic corsets."

At the beginning of August, our Cemetery Committee gathered with several volunteers to clean the headstones at the Oneida Community Cemetery.

Using preservation-safe techniques and materials, volunteers tackled dirt, vegetation, and years of buildup to help these monuments look their best while protecting the historic stone.

Inspired by the Oneida Community’s β€œBees”—communal work parties where Communty members came together to get things doneβ€”our volunteers rolled up their sleeves for a wonderful morning of community, hands-on history, and preservation. Thank you for your efforts!

Recently rediscovered, these films have been safely tucked away in the OCMH collection for nearly a decade. Now, thanks to a generous grant from the Central New York Library Resources Council, our staff has digitized these archives to share with the public for the very first time.

Update from our intern Norah:

A culture of writing and record-keeping flourished within the Oneida Community. Even after the transition from religious commune to joint-stock company, many of the old ideals and practices continued.

Along with her braided wall hangings and textiles, and the storybooks she wrote and illustrated for her grandchildren, Jessie Catherine Kinsley, during the early 20th century, kept diaries, filling pages and notebooks with writing, sketches, and watercolor and pastel artworks. Kinsley's journals display her process of documenting her experiences, the Community's persisting values surrounding self-improvement, -development, and intimate community, and Kinsley's own personal pursuit of art, literature, and travel.
