Now on view: Ken Price’s “Dynamo B” located in the Hawks Pavilion, Schrager Gallery H3.

“Dynamo B” crawls skyward as its speckled surface suggests polished stone, but this is clay, laboriously worked until it glows. Ken Price made this sculpture during his self-proclaimed “golden period,” the culmination of forty years he dedicated to testing the limits of ceramics. He began experimenting with acrylics in the 1980s, applying as many as one hundred coats of paint in up to seven different colors to bisque-fired clay. He then sanded through the strata, adjusting his pressure to reveal depths of pigment. Even the undersides of Price’s ceramics received this treatment, supporting his belief that “unfinished work loses its power.”

Image: Ken Price (American, 1935–2012), “Dynamo B,” 2002, fired and painted clay, 24 ½ x 17 x 16 ½ in. (62.2 x 43.2 x 41.9 cm), The Phillip G. Schrager Collection. Promised gift of Terri L. Schrager

Bonjour! Join us on Thu, Oct 8, 5–7 pm for Apéro at The Joslyn, a free, drop-in program, designed for French language speakers of all abilities!

The Joslyn is partnering with Alliance Française Omaha to hold their monthly program, Apéro, in the Museum’s Community Room, in celebration of “Café Society: Art and Sociability in Paris, 1855–1914.” Apéro, short for apéritif, is sacred in France: an hour or so before dinner when you can unwind over a glass of w**e, a few light snacks, and good conversation.

Alliance Française Omaha has hosted a monthly Apéro for years for its members, students, and anyone who wants to speak French in a supportive, friendly environment. French is encouraged but not always required; for beginners, it’s OK to smile and nod. This evening will include a short introduction to the exhibition (in English) by Museum staff, light bites, drinks for purchase, and an exhibition ticket to “Café Society.”
