Every work in our cooperative gallery is crafted with skill and passion by artists who live and create on the island. A treasured Orcas Island destination for visitors and locals alike, the Artworks offers one of the finest selections of local art and crafts in the San Juan Islands. We represent over forty Orcas Island artists and crafts people, working in pottery, sculpture, jewelry, glass, wood,

paintings, prints, wearable art, fiber and more. Established in 1981, our gallery is one of the oldest artist cooperatives in the country. As the gallery is owned and operated by the artists themselves, there is the unique opportunity of meeting one or more of them on any given day. Artworks has returned to their permanent location in the historic Strawberry Barreling Building in Olga village at the corner of Olga Road and Point Lawrence Road.

Shawna Marie Franklin s the Orcas Island Artworks Featured Artist for September!
Shawna's words about her work: "My Distant Memory series is comprised of large format oil paintings and large format collagraph mono-prints. This, like most of my work, is an on going series.

My artistic process begins with biological inquiry and observation in the field, together with drawing and writing. I utilize the practice of painting, printmaking, and drawing to create cohesive bodies of work that tell a story about the natural world. Through the act of making art, I am accomplishing a larger personal goal of bearing witness and practicing empathy towards the non-human world. I hope that my art will ultimately remind the viewer of the importance of the non-human life on this planet.

Our Featured Artist for the month of July is fiber artist Mandy Troxel. Mandy creates highly detailed pieces of 100% sheep's wool roving, felted in place using both wet and needle felting methods.

For our feature wall, Mandy created her largest and most involved work to date. About it she writes:

"Here on Orcas Island, I have a favorite boulder. It is perfectly situated for soaking in the late afternoon sun and has an unfiltered view of the historic apple barn off Crow Valley road. I’m not the only one who loves this rock. It happens to be located on Lum Farm at Coffelt Farm Preserve, and is a coveted hang-out of the resident goats.

Locals sometimes refer to Orcas Island as “the rock”. While the name of this painting is literal, it’s also a nod to this affectionate nickname and to island agriculture. "

Keep an eye out on Saturday mornings starting July 11, when Mandy will be at the gallery demo-ing this art!
