California Dreaming 🌴

Did you know Southern Pacific trains served Ogden? This coach passenger ticket was purchased on June 23, 1950 to get to Stockton, California from Ogden, Utah. It cost about $20 for the whole trip.

Do you remember riding a train from Union Station? 🚂

Up for a canyon drive? 🚃

Electric trolleys operated between Ogden's downtown and Ogden Canyon from 1906 until 1935. Two trolley cars offered service to Ogden's hot springs in 1907. By 1909, passengers could access all the way to the Hermitage resort. The photo shows Ogden Rapid Transit Company on the side of this trolley. Bill Adams took this photo between 1906 and 1914.

What's your favorite site in the canyon?

Want to see the sights in Ogden? 🚌📸

This 1907 tourist postcard offers 24 of Ogden's iconic views in this cute sight seeing automobile. The circular flap at the front still has photos attached. From J.H. Spargo in Ogden Utah, it was sent to Miss M.R. Menecie in Alcova, Wyoming.

Join us! 🎨

Saturday is Community Chalk Day at Union Station, a day to practice your sidewalk art and place your votes. Who was more important: Washington or Lincoln? What is better: stars or fireworks? What is the best food?

This activity kicks off our programming for "Voices and Votes: Democracy in America," an exhibit by the Smithsonian Museums on Main Street. Coming to the Museums at Union Station October 23!

Keep your eyes peeled for more info coming soon! 👀

New at the museum ✨

The Mountain View Auto Court was a motel complex developed in the 1930s to attract tourists touring the country via automobile. As one of Ogden's first motels, it contained multiple motel units. Each unit was outfitted with a living room, bathroom, kitchen, and bedroom. Premium units also included a covered garage for vehicles.

The motel began serving long term tenants in the 1940s. In the late 1980s, it was given the designation as a historical place and converted into low-income housing. Do you know this building?

Hold, please... ☎️

Back in 1910, calls needed to be manually connected to the desired line. This was done through connections on a telephone switchboard. These Ogden ladies made sure your call went to the right person.

What did you use first: landline or cell phone?

Absolutely forbidden 🚫

Between 1897 and 1910, politicians and the United States Postal Service put a ban on nearly all forms of gambling in the United States. State-sponsored gambling was illegal. Arizona and New Mexico even had to outlaw gambling to achieve statehood. Despite opposition, the public continued to gamble amongst themselves and would even smuggle lottery tickets into the country.

State sanctions lotteries started making a comeback in 1967 and still remain today. On the job? The USPS still has strict rules against gambling on company premises and while working.
