OPS Building Passes Final Inspection

The Ocracoke Preservation Society (OPS) announces the Ocracoke Commons Building (the former Island Inn and Odd Fellows Lodge) has successfully passed its final building inspection.

This completes the project started in 2018 to preserve the historic building and save the grounds from development.

In December of 2017, a group of concerned Ocracoke citizens approached the OPS Executive Committee with a plan for OPS to purchase the property and restore the original part of the Island Inn.

The OPS Executive Committee approved the plan and purchased the property in May of 2018 and began work.

The newly restored Ocracoke Commons Building will be operated by the newly formed Ocracoke Commons Visitor & Cultural Center , a 501c3 non-profit organization. As well as the building serving as a visitor center, the Commons will include a garden/park and public restrooms. It will be available for community activities and for weddings, receptions, reunions, and corporate events.

The project was made possible by the generous grants of the Ocracoke Occupancy Tax Board and the Ocracoke Township Tourist Development Agency. Other grants were awarded by the Outer Banks Community Foundation, the Cannon Agency, and the Covington Foundation.

The project was also funded by the monetary and volunteer contributions of the Ocracoke community and by the many people who love Ocracoke.

A Grand Opening and a Ribbon Cutting will be held on Tuesday November 10th in association with the OPS Annual Fall General Membership Meeting and pot luck; free and open to all.

With much sadness.... another island doyenne bids adieu.... Much love and support to Greg and Eden's families...

Eden Eure Honeycutt, 74, passed away unexpectedly at her beloved farm in Dugspur, Virginia, on September 20, 2026. Eden was born on July 18, 1952, in Pasquotank County, N.C., and raised in Perquimans County on a family farm. At age 19, Eden relocated to the Outer Banks, a move that would change her....
