Day 1 McPherson, Kansas. Off to find Coronado. L to R Baron Shiveley, John Blake, Dr. Deni Seymour and Chris Novak. The adventure begins….

10 days of fieldwork yielded a substantial quantity of Coronado expedition artifacts, such as this chain mail ring, proving they were here!

Dr. Deni Seymour’s investigation into Coronado is a continuing saga!

The 1540’s Coronado Expedition, guided by a Native guide, “The Turk”, traveled from then Tiguex village near Albuquerque through New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma to Kansas in search of the fabled Quivira.
This planned wild goose chase was obviously concocted by the Tiguex tribe to get Coronado’s abusive troops away from the villages whose resources Coronado’s men were consuming.
Mark Twain’s famous quote again serves.
“It’s easier to fool someone than it is to convince them they’ve been fooled”
After being led astray far too long by the Turk, the Spaniards executed him, turned tail and dragged back to Albuquerque .
Pimeriaaltamuseum.org will accompany Dr. Deni Seymour to Kansas to study more sites and look for artifacts of the fabled , failed, frustrated adventure that was Coronado’s!

A plaque memorializing Native Nogalian Fred Rocklin hangs in Pimeria Alta Museum. Brother to Abe Rocklin, they both left an indelible legacy of good citizenship and made Nogales a better place!

Dr. Deni Seymour, seen this?

Here's another PPHS collection item on loan: a Spanish halberd currently on display at the Bullock Texas State History Museum in Austin. It's part of an exhibition about the rise and fall of nations in Texas until Mexican Independence in 1821.

This metal halberd head was discovered in 1925 near Happy, Texas. Spanish explorer Coronado traveled through this area in 1541, and halberds were included in the Coronado expedition's inventory of equipment. (The wooden pole is a reproduction.)

Mexican Consul Marcos Moreno Baéz hosted a presentation and discussion of his new book “Voces de la Frontera/Voices from the Border”. We discussed border issues with a distinguished panel at Pimeria Alta Museum. (pimeriaaltamuseum.org)

We are delighted to welcome the Pimeria Alta Museum as our FIRST Nogales based Concierge Ambassador, enhancing our network of heritage experts within the Santa Cruz Valley National Heritage Area.
