Allow me to introduce you to this illusion painting, up close. Its identity. The colors. The shape of the brushstrokes. The mood.

The illusions sometimes don't feel real to me until I have a chance to look at the process pics start to finish like this, and really get a sense of who the painting is.

I varnish these pieces and frame them archivally, in locally-built frames crafted just for them.

It would be easy for me to hold onto these paintings forever, but I want the paintings to have a chance to go across the country, and even around the world, to connect with others.

In new homes, it also helps create new conversations surrounding art, nature, and conservation.

Confession: When I’m standing behind the illusion, I really have to use my imagination that it’s blending.

Cuz all I can see is the back of the canvas. But I remind myself that a minute ago, over at the camera, it looked right.

I also remind myself, in these moments, just how far I’ve come. Not only since the beginning of the illusion, but through life and as an artist.

In hindsight, the “pastel blobs” in our pasts are the very stepping stones that brought us to where we are now. They’re worth more than meets the eye.

I don't know how to speak “robin” properly, but through painting and gardening, I've learned how to carry what feels like a conversation with them.

Robins are one of my favorite birds for being social and seeking the company and protection of humans. That's no coincidence that they build their nest on your porch or come to “hang out” when you're tending the yard.

Birds approaching me while painting is a pretty frequent occurrence, and I wanted to share the moment with you.

Chatting with the birds while painting - these are the kind of things I daydream about during long days and the warm memories I fall asleep to at night.

Denim clad and mud on my boots, I'm always amused how very different chatting with the birds is in real life compared to the fairy tale princesses in the movies.

Painting is enough of a handful without having to navigate a ballgown. I think I'll stick to jeans.

Final touches on the illusion that came after a leap of faith: The shifting clouds required me to move the illusion to a different angle - a new angle I thought might ruin everything.

An extended look into the first steps of the illusion process.

I used to try and hide early-stages like this, fearing you seeing the “ugly stage”.

But now I see the worth in this phase. This is when I start experimenting with decisions to figure out what the right ones will be.

In art, and life, our stories are defined by the steps we took to get to where we’re going.

Illusion closeups + BTS 🤍🌸 Two Mile Creek Crabapple Tree, Tonawanda. This illusion brought me to peace with painting flowering trees.

For a long time, I was hard on myself about some of my early matches of flowering trees, years ago. But I persevered - continuing to paint and study them. And I'm excited to keep improving.

Along with growing in my visual understanding of flowering trees, I've gained a greater awareness and respect for different species of trees.

And in the last years, I dove into learning the differences between native trees and more ornamental varieties like this crabapple.

A crabapple like this is more like eye-candy than environmentally beneficial, compared to native trees.

But as humans, we need a level of inspiration. Trees like this do help get people outdoors and appreciating nature. And the more people that get outdoors, the more teammates we have to help conserve and protect our world.

Wishing for five more minutes with the illusion. It took a while to paint it, and I got so attached to it.

And I feel like, in a way, the painting has gotten attached to the surroundings. It feels a little more than a little wrong to move it.

Breaking the illusion is a “no turning back” feeling. Like cutting off 4 inches of hair. Cannonballing into a chilly lake. Or telling someone you care about how you feel.

These kind of things, there’s no perfect way to do it. Just gotta take a deep breath and go for it.

A lovely tree isn't always a beneficial tree. This is a common theme in the ecological history of the U.S., or even humankind, where we're often tempted to prioritize aesthetic value over environmental benefits.

Non-native crabapple trees are much tamer than invasive species like Bradford pear trees. They don’t spread aggressively, and there are even some varieties native to the Northeast.

However, overall, when compared to native varieties of trees, the benefits pale in comparison.

For example, one of my source mentions a native oak tree can host around 400 species of caterpillars and insects, while a crabapple tree can only host around 20-60.

For the health of our forests, the trees we need are not the belles of the ball, like this crabapple, but the sturdier native varieties like oaks, maples, and hickories.

Loving the oaks and other trees, though, may require us to stop and reexamine what we consider to be beautiful though, especially after we’ve long been conditioned to admire showy varieties of trees.

Birds gather as I begin the illusion, watching curiously from nearby trees. The more I’ve painted, the more I’ve found birds deliberately seeking me out.

In this case, they stayed nearby throughout the illusion - perched in a nearby tree, singing and calling to me.

When I ignored an especially spunky red-winged blackbird, it repeatedly called louder til I said hi, looked it in the eye, and acknowledged it. If there’s one thing I’ve learned about the birdies: they love attention and crave connection.

I adore their curiosity - they eye up the tripods with wonder, sometimes swooping over for a closer look.

A lot of filmmakers avoid birds or actively set up methods to ward them off, as they tend to “ruin” audio quality. Me? Well, I don’t mind one darn bit.

They’re such darling company. So sweet. So innocent.

And my work is intended to spread awareness about the environment to help protect their homes - so it’s altogether fitting they “star” in the show.

Chaos mic checks before the illusion begins. This is an everyday part of the filming process for me, setting things up for success. A majority of my workload leans more toward director/filmmaker than painter.

I never intended to post this footage. The raw footage was meant for my eyes only, and even then intended to be discarded after ensuring I was pleased with sound and light quality.

But I decided recently I wanted to show you more BTS content. So here’s me “preparing for take off.”

We’ve got an illusion to paint. Let’s get to it in the next part.
