On April 13, 1919, a powerful symbol of gratitude and remembrance was dedicated in Newport News — the Victory Arch.

Originally built to honor returning service members of World War I, the Arch stands today as a lasting reminder of courage, sacrifice, and community resilience. More than a monument, it represents the spirit of those who served and the generations who continue to remember their legacy.

As we reflect on this historic dedication, we recognize how the Victory Arch continues to connect our past to our present — reminding us that history lives within the places we preserve and the stories we share.

Join us in honoring this moment in local and national history.

Marie Garrow Moss stands as a singular figure in Virginia’s military history. As the only woman from the Commonwealth known to have served in the pioneering "Hello Girls" unit, she represents the very first wave of American women to perform essential, non-nursing technical roles for the U.S. Army.

Though she and her fellow operators wore the uniform and swore the military oath, they were forced to fight for official veteran status for 60 years - a battle they finally won in 1977.

Today, her legacy is preserved at the Virginia War Museum in Newport News, which houses her original military papers, photos, and uniform. Her story is a powerful testament to the determination of Virginia women who, like Moss, served their country with distinction long before they were granted the full recognition they deserved.

On this day, we celebrate the strength, resilience, and determination of the women who helped power America during World War II…especially the iconic figure of Rosie the Riveter.

Representing millions of women who stepped into industrial jobs while men were serving overseas, Rosie became a lasting symbol of courage, hard work, and the ability to rise to any challenge.

From factories to shipyards, these women didn’t just support the war effort – they helped redefine what women could achieve in the workforce and beyond.

Their legacy continues to inspire generations of leaders, makers, and changemakers today.

Join us as we continue to honor the impact of women in military history at Women at War: A Women’s History Month Celebration at the Virginia War Museum.
