A little Newark history for your timeline. 📸❤️

Did you know that The Newark Museum of Art once had a Junior Museum where generations of children explored art, nature, science, and history?

More than a century ago, the Museum began creating opportunities for its youngest visitors to learn through discovery, experimentation, and creativity.

And these photographs give us a glimpse into that history!

The program went on to serve more than 60,000 children before coming to an end in 2010.

But the story doesn't end there.

This October, the Junior Museum returns! 🎨🔬✨

A new generation of children ages 3–13 will have the opportunity to explore astronomy, animal superpowers, sculpture, optical illusions, and more through age-specific, hands-on activities.

📅 Saturdays, October 24–November 21
⏰ Two hours each week for five weeks
🎨 All materials included
🎟️ Just $50 for the entire session

More than a century later, we're making room for a whole new generation of curious minds. ❤️

Registration is now open: tinyurl.com/ywtzww2y

Were you or someone in your family part of the original Junior Museum? We'd love to hear your memories!

Founded in the wake of the Newark Rebellion of 1967, Aljira emerged alongside a network of alternative art spaces across Newark. From Amiri Baraka’s Spirit House, founded in 1967, to Gladys Barker Grauer’s ARTS Studio in 1972, these spaces created new opportunities for artists, exhibitions, and community gathering throughout the city. Aljira’s exhibitions challenged institutional boundaries while remaining deeply committed to diversity and inclusion. From projects and exhibitions such as, The Children’s Mural to its Inaugural Exhibition both held in 1983, Aljira championed marginalized artists through dedicated space while engraining itself within the social fabric of the city of Newark.

Opening October 15, Dreamtime in Newark celebrates Aljira’s 35-year tenure in Newark and its global impact. In collaboration with The Aljira Archive Project and drawing on the Museum’s renowned collection of contemporary art, Dreamtime in Newark features major artworks by 44 local and global artists and an expansive range of media. The exhibition centers Newark as an important site for experimentation and inclusiveness in both studio and curatorial practice. Curated by Alliyah Allen, independent curator, and Tricia Laughlin Bloom, Senior Curator of American Art.
