Pat Bell was a trustee and major contributor to The Aljira Fine Art Auction. She had an insatiable appetite for collecting and each year made some of the most significant gifts to this signature Aljira event. One month before she passed she called to tell us (Cicely and me) she had stage four cancer. It was the first time she had called in years! She was in her car on the way to her oncologist and wasn’t looking for sympathy she said, she wanted to apologize for the precipitous collapse of Aljira under her watch and she wanted to help. She wanted to know how could she make amends and she proposed selling her beloved collection to support The Newark Museum Of Art’s In Dreamtime: Aljira, a Center for Contemporary Art 1983 to 2018 (October 15, 2026 to February 28, 2027) and its related publication. “That’s something I could get behind” she said perking up. I told Pat I had forgiven her and that we should chat some more about her idea at a later time. It was the last time I spoke to Pat Bell.

RIP my dear friend, we did some spectacular events together!

The 2024 campaign ends December 31: There is still time to help us reach our year end goal.

Thanks to all our early supporters of The Aljira Archive Project: Your gift helped cover the cost of recovery from the remnants of Ida, offsite storage of $800 per month and preproduction costs for the Archive’s first research project A Dream In IV Acts, a full length documentary of Aljira’s legacy.
Our campaign is now in raising funds for production phase of A Dream In IV Acts and is planning its premiere in tandem with a major exhibition and publication in 2026 with The Newark Museum of Art to secure Aljira’s history for posterity and research.

“I encourage you to support their fundraising at any level that you can. The only way to insure an accurate telling of the history is if those who were there making it do the telling. If you agree, go to the link below to see how you can support The Aljira Archive Project. I'm supporting this project and encourage you to do the same.”

“Everything was covered in plaster—the walls, the floors, the ceiling and the first I saw him, he himself was a walking Egyptian mummy, entirely white, covered in white plaster,” Barbara Chase-Riboud recalled of her 1962 visit to the Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti’s Montparnasse studio.

Inspired by this encounter, a new exhibition “The Encounter: Barbara Chase-Riboud/Alberto Giacometti” brings together the work of these two expatriate sculptors, who both looked to the past in order to reimagine the art of their time, and follows Chase-Riboud’s practice from that moment in Paris to the present.

Now open! See the exhibition only at MoMA, learn more and plan your visit → mo.ma/theencounter
