The John J. Carroll Department Store was a beloved business in Downtown Newark for generations. It first opened its doors in 1886 as Carroll and Company, but in 1898, John J. Carroll bought out his partners and renamed the store after himself. After renting for several years, Carroll built his own building on 3rd Street that opened in February 1920 and still stands, baring the store’s name, today.
Unfortunately, after nearly 100 years of quality customer service and the much admired “Carroll Hospitality,” the company was bought out by the Uhlman’s chain of department stores. Still the name John J. Carroll sparks found memories of family adventures for many in Newark and the surrounding area. Do you have any memories of visiting John J. Carroll’s Department Store?
