The John J. Carroll Department Store was a beloved business in Downtown Newark for generations. It first opened its doors in 1886 as Carroll and Company, but in 1898, John J. Carroll bought out his partners and renamed the store after himself. After renting for several years, Carroll built his own building on 3rd Street that opened in February 1920 and still stands, baring the store’s name, today.

Unfortunately, after nearly 100 years of quality customer service and the much admired “Carroll Hospitality,” the company was bought out by the Uhlman’s chain of department stores. Still the name John J. Carroll sparks found memories of family adventures for many in Newark and the surrounding area. Do you have any memories of visiting John J. Carroll’s Department Store? Feel free to share in the comments below!

After leaving Mount Crumpit for the Whoville Whobilation, the Grinch realized his schedule wasn't as full as he thought. So, he said to himself, "Why not visit The Works for their schedule holds quite a lot!"

And while we don't know if the Grinch will visit The Works anytime soon (he does have dinner with himself and jazzercise after all), we hope that you do and that you'll have a ball!

We're almost done rhyming...Here's what to do! Take a look at our calendar for exciting events! There's something for everyone, if you ask our two cents. 📆

Did you know glass is made from sand? The glass used by glassblowers usually contains around 50% sand and a mix of other ingredients such as lime, potash, and borax. To make colored glass, silver, copper, manganese, and other materials are added. The additives a glassmaker chooses will alter not only the color of the glass, but the overall behavior of it when it is heated and formed.

You can watch our glassblowers make items using techniques that haven't changed since the 1600's Wednesday through Saturday, performed live as they narrate the process.

Did you know having a Works Membership means you receive $10 off Make Your Own Glass Experiences? Plus, 10% off any purchase in The Gear Shop, including glass! 🔥

He was Licking County's "Drummer Boy!"

Did you know Johnny Clem (as many know him) was actually John Joseph Klem? There are many stories surrounding the Newark-born Clem, but after trying (and failing) to enlist in the Union Army at the age of 10, he finally made his way into the 22nd Michigan as a drummer boy, and the legend grew.

He eventually became the youngest soldier in the history of the U.S. Army to become a noncommissioned officer and ended his 44 year military career as a major general. Clem died in 1937, in San Antonio, TX and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. 🥁

On this day in history, the Original Tea was spilled...

Today is the 250th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party! On a cold evening in 1773, thousands of angry Bostonians marched to the Boston harbor to watch 30-60 men disguised as Mohawks dump over 90,000 pounds of tea into the bay in protest of the Tea Act. This Act established a monopoly for the British East India Company and was passed by a parliament which had no colonial representation. When the men who carried out the protest could not be identified, the British parliament chose to punish the city of Boston instead.

Over the next two years, they passed a series of “Intolerable Acts” that lead American colonists to feel even more oppressed, sparking even more violence and, eventually, the American Revolutionary War.

So, make yourself a cup of coffee today and throw away all your tea for our nation’s rebellious founders. And stay tuned for more 250th anniversaries as we gear up for our nation’s 250th birthday in 2026! 🎂

Today our Curious Kids learned about Noche de Rábanos, or Night of the Radishes, a festival in Oaxaca, Mexico celebrated every year on December 23. It began in the 1800s as a way for farmers to attract people to the Christmas market. People carve elaborate sculptures out of radishes that are grown specially for the event. Our CKs made their own versions with red and daikon radishes! ❤️
