On September 26, Taller Boricua was honored to host the reception following the Piri Thomas street dedication in East Harlem.

Special thanks to Debbie Quinones and the Boricua Icons Initiative for this important tribute to Piri Thomas, poet, novelist, activist, educator, and one of El Barrio's most unforgettable literary voices. Through his memoir Down These Mean Streets, Piri gave readers an honest portrait of growing up Afro Puerto Rican in this community, writing openly about race, identity, and belonging.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in the gallery to celebrate his legacy. 🖤

🌿 ¡El Yunque llegó a El Barrio! 🌿

NATURA's opening weekend at Taller Boricua brought our community together, from a packed house at Thursday's opening reception to Saturday's artist talk and poetry reading, celebrating ArteYUNQUE's inaugural artist cohort and their poetic exploration at the intersection of art, nature, and El Yunque.

Thank you to Arte Yunque, the Taller Boricua team, and the Neighborhood Association for Inter-Cultural Affairs (N.A.I.C.A.) for an unforgettable weekend. NATURA is now on view at Taller Boricua, 1680 Lexington Avenue, El Barrio, New York 10029, from September 10 through January 17, 2027.

In 1981, the Borough of Manhattan declared September 16th "Taller Boricua Hispanic Artist Day." A proclamation honoring artists, organizers, and community building spaces for Puerto Rican art, expression, and resistance through workshops, exhibitions, and mentorship.

Founded in 1969, Taller Boricua remains a sanctuary for emerging and established artists and a keeper of cultural memory. From street exhibitions to storefronts to the galleries we occupy today, we continue creating, fighting, and building.

This day celebrates those who came before us and those building our future right now.

🌿 Join us for NATURA: Public Programming on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at Taller Boricua in El Barrio. 🌿

⏰ 1:00pm — Artist talk with Migdalia Luz Barens-Vera, Zaida Adriana Goveo Balmaseda, Ivelisse Jiménez, Guillermo Rodríguez, and Jaime & Javier Suáreza, moderated by Miguel Luciano ().

⏰ 3:00pm — NATURA (lírico) will gather voices of the Puerto Rican diaspora: Denice Frohman, Mariposa Fernández, Ricardo Alberto Maldonado, Urayoán Noel, and Willie Perdomo for a poetry reading in conversation with the work of the five participating artists. This program is presented in collaboration with CENTRO, the Center for Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College.
