⏰ 1:00pm — Artist talk with Migdalia Luz Barens-Vera, Zaida Adriana Goveo Balmaseda, Ivelisse Jiménez, Guillermo Rodríguez, and Jaime & Javier Suáreza, moderated by Miguel Luciano ().

⏰ 3:00pm — NATURA (lírico) will gather voices of the Puerto Rican diaspora: Denice Frohman, Mariposa Fernández, Ricardo Alberto Maldonado, Urayoán Noel, and Willie Perdomo for a poetry reading in conversation with the work of the five participating artists. This program is presented in collaboration with CENTRO, the Center for Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College.

Today, young students visited the Taller Boricua Gallery and met artist James Cuebas Viajador de Sul, who guided them through "Light, Memory & the Hand-Made Print." 📸 Also present was artist Felix Plaza, he shared perspective as students explored how printmaking & photography documents history, community, and resistance.

Teachers and college interns sparked conversations about what inspires creative work: the Young Lords, activism, the power of community. The gallery visit culminated in a hands-on arts and crafts session where students drew what moved them most.

Today, young artists discovered the power of printmaking at the The Rafael Tufiño Printmaking Workshop at Taller Boricua. 🎨 Under the guidance of Nitza Tufino, students learned to draw and cut linoleum, working with our small press to create their own prints.

With artist Eliezer Berrios from our Taller Boricua collective and teacher Patrick's Summer Youth Program, these students engaged in a tradition that honors generations of Puerto Rican printmakers who transformed this accessible art form into a tool for storytelling and social change.

On June 30, 2026, our community honored Dylcia Pagán with the dedication of Dylcia Pagán Place at the NW corner of East 107th Street in El Barrio, NYC.

A fearless organizer, media pioneer, and revolutionary, Dylcia spent her life fighting for Puerto Rican independence, housing justice, and community empowerment. Though imprisoned for 63 years, she never wavered. She was granted clemency in 1999.

The day featured music, poetry, remarks from elected officials and community leaders, and a reception at Taller Boricua Gallery where neighbors and friends gathered to celebrate her incredible legacy.

Dylcia passed away in 2024 as a national hero, but her spirit of resistance and resilience continues to inspire us all.

A street corner in El Barrio now bears her name: a permanent tribute to her legacy.

Last night, the gallery came alive for James Cuebas. ✨

Artists, community, and friends gathered as fifty years of photography and alternative printmaking filled our walls for a solo exhibition. Beautiful words were exchanged. Stories were shared. Years of friendship, history, and a deep love for work that must be seen, and felt, in person filled every corner of the space.

This is what culture feels like. This is why Taller Boricua's Rafael Tufiño Printmaking Workshop matter.

“The exhibition, Consejo Grafico Nacional: Latino Printmakers in the United States, includes 40 prints produced through an independent coalition of workshops, called talleres, based in Chicago, Texas, California, New Jersey, New York and Puerto Rico. Featuring prints by artists from across the Americas who trained in or are affiliated with these workshops, the exhibition is organized into two sets, or portfolios—each with its own distinct theme.
One portfolio, La Huella Magistral: Homage to Master Printmakers, recognizes the artists’ mentors who taught and inspired them. The other, Los Americans: Same=Different, explores artists’ perspectives on how American identity is defined across borders. Both feature a broad range of printmaking techniques, including woodblock prints, linocuts, etchings, screenprints, lithographs and collagraphs. Some works involve multiple techniques combined into a single print. While the portfolios are united around central themes, the prints include a wide variety of visual styles and artistic approaches, reflecting the individuality of each artist.”

For fifty years, James Cuebas has walked into the world with a camera and no agenda. No destination. No plan. Just presence and a lifelong devotion to the moment light, gesture, and composition arrive together in the same breath. Down side streets and into quiet corners, through cities and small neighborhoods, following light in search of the unrepeatable instant when something ordinary becomes worth remembering.

This Thursday, Taller Boricua opens Light, Memory, and the Hand-Made Print: Journeys Through Photography and Alternative Processes, a solo exhibition celebrating the art of seeing and the craft of the hand-made print. James Cuebas' work transforms decades of travel and memory into something tactile and singular, where every photograph is given a second life by hand.
