Siena Smith, hush and breathe, 2026.

“Where does Black play and curiosity happen? What games do we play for fun, communication, and survival? How are Black children and adults nurtured, understood, protected, punished? How is our humanity treated? This work imagines Black play as a sacred geography; an ever-shifting territory carved out between hypervisibility and erasure. It lives in the corners of classrooms where Black girls whisper stories too magical for the curriculum. It blooms in corner stores, in backyards, in living-room dance offs, on front steps filled with laughter. It survives in moments recovered from a world that too often decides what Black girlhood and womanhood are allowed to be.”

Born and based in Los Angeles, California, Edgar Ramirez draws inspiration from the industrial landscapes surrounding the Port of Los Angeles, transforming overlooked urban surfaces into meditations on labor, time, and endurance. His paintings reflect the physical and emotional conditions of a city shaped by industry, repetition, and the communities that sustain it.

In Alameda Stones, Ramirez looks closely at the corridor along Alameda Street, where trains, trucks, shipping containers, and auto body shops create a landscape defined by constant activity yet often overlooked. Through layers of color, texture, and accumulated marks, the work captures the quiet evidence of labor and the passage of time.

Loïs Mailou Jones: Sphere of Influence

This exhibition celebrates the extraordinary legacy of one of the most influential American artists of the twentieth century, whose impact extends far beyond her own remarkable body of work.

An innovative painter, printmaker, and pioneering cultural figure, Jones built a career spanning more than seven decades, drawing inspiration from the United States, Europe, the Caribbean, and Africa while helping redefine the possibilities of modern American art. Alongside her prolific artistic practice, she spent nearly 50 years teaching at Howard University, where she mentored generations of artists through a rigorous approach to design, discipline, and cultural inquiry.

Presented on Martha’s Vineyard, a place Jones cherished throughout her life, Sphere of Influence examines the lasting impact of both her artistic vision and her role as an educator. Through paintings and prints by former students, colleagues, and contemporary artists, the exhibition demonstrates that Jones’s influence lives on across generations through the artists she inspired, the ideas she championed, and the enduring strength of her own artistic practice.

Held In Tension concludes today, July 5.

The exhibition opened on Juneteenth and closes as the nation marks Independence Day and the 250th anniversary of the United States.

Between these two dates, Held In Tension has asked us to consider history not as something behind us, but as a force that continues to shape who we are, what we inherit, and how we understand the nation we inhabit.

History is not passive. It is formative.

As we reflect on the first 250 years of the United States, we hope this exhibition has prompted thought about the role each of us can play in positively shaping the next 250.

Maria-Lana Queen’s God Help America offers a fitting final reflection.

Blk Study Apparatus I (an inevitable tension, a work in progress), 2026.

“Frustration, disappointment, and critical hope.” These words frame Blk Study Apparatus I by Nnaemeka Ekwelum, a Chicago-based fiber and installation artist whose practice explores Black diasporic identity, collective memory, and the lasting impacts of colonialism.

Constructed from reclaimed wood, plastic lacing, found objects, and plarn made from recycled plastic bags collected during the artist’s travels through South Africa, Ghana, and the United States, the work transforms everyday materials into a meditation on difference, displacement, and connection across the African diaspora.

Since 2016, Ekwelum has incorporated plastic lacing into his practice as a material rooted in memory, friendship, and healing. Through weaving and sculpture, he investigates how materials can carry histories of grief, resilience, love, and hope, inviting viewers to reflect on the ways personal and collective experiences are woven together.

Now on view through Sunday, July 5 as part of Held in Tension, an exhibition that reflects on the space between Juneteenth and July 4. Two dates. One unresolved distance.

Who Is Safe From Whom, 2026

Baltimore-based artist Kim Rice creates work that examines the construct of race through the lens of whiteness. Using common materials and craft-based media, her labor-intensive practice meditates on systemic racism and the policies that continue to shape American society. Crocheted, sewn, and linked together, Rice’s works reveal the ways whiteness is woven into the fabric of everyday life.

This piece is part of her Caution series, begun during the COVID-19 pandemic. Rather than emerging from a strategic response to policy, the series grew from an intuitive emotional reaction to where we are as a country and the urgent need to ask who is feared, and why.

“It’s 2022, and although many things have changed, we are still on this continuum since the founding of this country. To address the constructs and repercussions of race, and to have a truly equitable country for all people, we must first understand our history. To reveal is to heal.” — Kim Rice
