On this day in 1903, a major milestone in Alaska’s maritime history was reached with the first lighting of Scotch Cap Light - Alaska’s first coastal lighthouse.

Lighthouses play a critical role in guiding mariners safely at sea, and as that need grew nationwide, lighthouse operations were officially transferred to the Coast Guard in 1939, bringing more of the nation’s lights under one unified mission of service and protection.

Today, that history is part of a broader story preserved and shared through the National Coast Guard Museum, where moments like these help tell the Coast Guard’s enduring mission of service, safety, and maritime heritage.

New London, Connecticut is Connecticut’s Coast Guard City and home to the future National Coast Guard Museum. Rich in maritime heritage, the city sits at the heart of Coast Guard history.

Since 1791, the city has served as a homeport for Coast Guard cutters, beginning with the Revenue Cutter Argus, one of the original vessels authorized by the First Congress and President George Washington.

The city’s legacy continued through Fort Trumbull, once home to the Revenue Cutter Academy, which later evolved into today’s United States Coast Guard Academy across the Thames River.

Conveniently situated between New York and Boston, New London offers visitors easy access and is easily reachable by all modes of transportation, with the Museum site located near the region’s transportation hub, including garage parking, bus service, and Union Station with daily Amtrak and Shoreline East commuter rail service.

Be a part of living history and buy a paver today! Commemorative pavers will adorn the Revenue Cutter Argus Promenade along the waterfront at the future National Coast Guard Museum in New London, Connecticut.

The dark gray, 3-inch-thick, textured granite pavers are custom-engraved and will last for generations. Pavers are available in two sizes, 4” x 8” and 8” x 8” and are 100% tax-deductible. The funds raised go directly toward the museum’s construction and supports its mission to educate, honor, and preserve the Nation’s rich maritime history of the United States Coast Guard!
