Thank you for your support of the oldest, continuously operating historical society in Indiana! The HCHS Museum is housed in the 1870 Italianate mansion that belonged to Civil War general William Grose. HCHS has an outstanding local history & genealogy library, collections of local artists, quilts, coverlets & textiles of all kinds, military artifacts from all U.S. wars, pioneers rooms, exhibits of industrial history (Maxwell & Briscoe, Hoosier Manufacturing Co., Jessie French Piano Factory), and much more. A tour through the HCHS Museum gives one an excellent sense of Henry County's entire history and its many facets.

On this day in Henry County history, Oct. 14, 1984, New Castle Trojan football fans were anxiously anticipating the final weeks of the football season. Led by bruising running back Tracy Asberry, Mark Surface's Trojans were in a three-way tie for the North Central Conference lead. New Castle, Lafayette and Richmond all had 4-1 records entering the final two weeks of conference play. New Castle went on to win the North Central Conference in 1984.

Do you remember that 1984 team? Brad Sidwell was another dangerous runner for the Trojans. The quarterback was Jason Duff.
Asberry ranked fifth on the state's scoring list and had 1,027 total yards entering the final two games of the regular season.

Quarterback Jason Duff had already thrown for more than 1,000 yards. Another running back, Brad Sidwell, had 146 yards on the ground in a Trojan victory over Muncie Central.

Pictured here is Asberry, described that season as a Sherman tank for his ability to run over opposing defenses, often carrying two or three would-be tacklers with him. Tracy died June 16, 2024, at the age of 58. He is a member of the Trojan Athletic Hall of Fame.

On this day in Henry County history, Oct. 13, 1987, David Toma, a former Newark, N.J. police officer whose undercover work and battles with his superiors became the basis of the television series, spoke to a countywide gathering of teenagers and their parents in New Castle Fieldhouse about the dangers of drugs and alcohol.
Today, David Tomas lives in New Jersey with his wife, Pat. He is 93 years old.

On Oct. 12, 1983, Coach Dennis Gipe led the Tri High Titans to an 8-0 victory at Milan, clinching the team's second IHSAA football playoff berth in three years.

A Mike Goodwin touchdown pass to Kelly Adkins late in the final quarter sealed the victory.

Gipe, a beloved figure in the South Henry area, died on Jan. 7, 2017, at the age of 64.

On Oct. 11, 1965, Jimmie Lee Mincks became the first Henry County soldier to lose his life in the Vietnam War.

Pictured here is a replica of the Vietnam Wall in Washington, D.C. A smaller scale version came to Middletown not once, but twice. Mincks' name is among more than 58,000 etched on that wall.

On Oct. 2, 1957, the movie "Raintree County" starring Elizabeth Taylor, Montgomery Clift and Eva Marie Saint had its world premiere at Brown Theatre in Louisville, Ky. The movie was based on the Ross Lockridge Jr. best-selling book and inspired by people, places and events in Henry County.

Lockridge never saw the movie. Stress and depression led him to take his own life on March 6, 1948.

On Oct. 3, 1842, Henry Clay, a former U.S. Secretary of State and U.S. Senator from Kentucky, spoke in Knightstown. Clay won the Whig nomination for President but was narrowly defeated by Democrat James K. Polk, who had made annexation of Texas a key campaign issue.

Clay ran unsuccessfully for President as many as five times. He was well thought of in Knightstown, so much so a street was once named after him. That street is now known as Main Street.

On Oct. 4, 1986, New Castle Coach Jerry Koger's girls golf team won the Greenfield regional and advanced to the state finals. Girls on the team included Valerie King, Julie Hayes, Brenda Bishop, Kelly Harvey, Jennifer Hayes and Brenda Bunch.

On Oct. 5 and Oct 6, New Castle, Indiana, became the center of attention for labor-union manufacturing turmoil as the Perfect Circle strike began. An estimated 1,200 strikers and sympathizers from other factories clogged streets around the plant to protest the firing of 35 employees. Six people were shot and 50 were arrested in the chaos around the plant but there were no deaths.

Martial law was declared and the National Guard was called. Tanks, sandbag machine gun nests and troops fixed with bayonets helped keep the peace. As many as 200 state police were headquartered at Memorial Park. Thousands came from across state lines to participate in the protests and add to the chaos.

Ultimately, workers returned on Oct. 11.

On Oct. 7, 1983, the controversy over elementary buildings in the Northwestern school district (now known as Shenandoah) was reaching a critical stage. Officials were faced with a state-imposed Jan. 1, 1984 deadline to make improvements at Middletown and Sulphur Springs elementary schools. Otherwise, they would have to be closed.

Cadiz Elementary School, pictured here, had already been closed.

Ultimately, after several years of debate, including school boared elections overturning plans already in place, a central site elementary school was built.

On Oct. 8, 1887, a seven-man executive committee met to take initial steps for forming the Henry County Historical Society. Today, the Henry County Historical Society is the oldest, continuously operating organization and museum of its kind in Indiana.

The museum is located at 606 S. 14th St. in New Castle.
