Today on we are celebrating freedom! Today and everyday, we remember and honor the voices from the past that have gotten us to this place. At Tryon Palace and the North Carolina History Center, to commemorate Juneteenth, last night we held a special Juneteenth presentation on the Tryon Palace Inclusive Public Art Project which memorializes the many Black artisans from New Bern who contributed to our city's development and history throughout the years. Graphic designer and project artist Marcus Kiser spoke about the importance of iconography and storytelling. Attendees also got to see the latest design elements of the sculpture which will be installed this summer in Downtown New Bern. Thank you to everyone who came out and made this a special evening of celebration and community.

Join us tonight (06/18) for a FREE, special Inclusive Public Art Project event! From 6-8pm at the North Carolina History Center (529 S Front St in New Bern), we'll be mingling over refreshments and discussing the latest information about the new sculpture coming soon to Wilson Park in Downtown New Bern. Plus you'll get to meet and hear from the artist team and our project team. It's going to be a great night, and we hope to see you there!

In support of , we sharing some of the fun cookbooks we have in our Museum Collection. This cookbook was an early publication by some of the very first Tryon Palace staff to share a few of their favorite recipes. "Eighteenth Century Hostesses are Twentieth Century Cooks" had 7 printings from 1966 – 1971. It includes staff favorites and even recipes from Gertrude Sprague Carraway, one of major influences on the reconstruction of Tryon Palace. Carraway was a longtime champion of Tryon Palace during its reconstruction and while serving on the Tryon Palace Commission. She also served as the Director of Tryon Palace.

In honor of Juneteenth, we invite you to join us in celebrating African American freedom, resilience, culture, and contributions to the New Bern community. Join us June 18, from 6:00–8:00 PM, at the North Carolina History Center for a special evening featuring members of the Inclusive Public Art Project artist team.

Come out and enjoy refreshments; meet the artists and project team; and engage in conversations about the power of public art to tell stories, inspire dialogue, and strengthen community connections. The title of the sculpture will also be revealed at the event! Bring the whole family and learn more about the power of public art.

❤️🤍💙 We can't believe all the love you've given us over our new Tryon Palace Fife and Drum Corps jackets as part of our celebrations with America 250 NC and beyond! As a special thank you, here is a behind the scenes look at the new jackets with the incredible human who made them possible.

Ericka has been with Tryon Palace for about a year and has already had a tremendous impact. From the Grand Union Flag to the uniform jackets and many more, her talents have truly increased the WOW factor here. Ericka and her team of volunteers sewed these jackets by hand and will continue that tradition for the other pieces you'll see from our historic costume shop.

In honor of Juneteenth, we invite you to join us in celebrating African American freedom, resilience, culture, and contributions to the New Bern community. Join us June 18, from 6:00–8:00 PM, at the North Carolina History Center for a special evening featuring members of our artist team.

Guests will receive a special sneak peek at the latest developments on the new sculpture that will soon be installed in Wilson Park in downtown New Bern. The new sculpture will honor African American artisans who shaped New Bern between from 1770 through 1900. Guests will also get to be the first to learn the title of the sculpture which will be revealed at the event!

As you can see, we’ve already broken ground for the sculpture’s base and are preparing the site for installation this summer. Guests will have the chance to enjoy refreshments, meet the artists and project team, and engage in conversation about the power of public art to tell stories, inspire dialogue, and strengthen community connections. Bring the whole family and learn more about the power of public art.

This event is FREE to the public, but we want to make sure we have enough refreshments for everyone. Please RSVP if you plan to attend by visiting our event page at TryonPalace.org.

This project is funded by an inclusive public art grant from the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation.

We are SO excited about the progress being made on the new sculpture coming as part of the Tryon Palace Inclusive Public Art Project! We broke ground this week in Wilson Park in Downtown New Bern for the sculpture's base and got the concrete poured. It's coming together nicely and the full sculpture will be installed this summer.

If you want to learn more, join us Thursday (06/18) from 6pm - 8pm at the North Carolina History Center for a special presentation on the project and sculpture. It's going to be a great night for the community to meet some of the artist team, our project team, and talk about how the stories of the artisans who inspired this sculpture are so important to New Bern! The event is FREE to attend and you can RSVP at TryonPalace.org.

Thank you to EVERYONE who came out to support Tryon Palace and the North Carolina Symphony for a special performance celebrating the Semiquincentennial and America 250 NC . It was a beautiful night--it started out hot but the breeze was wonderful--and the music was incredible as always.

And a special congratulations to our friend Linda Staunch for being inducted into the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, North Carolina's highest civilian honor for state service.

Tonight (06/11) is the night! Join us on the Tryon Palace South Lawn for an amazing--and FREE--performance of Patriotic Pops by the North Carolina Symphony!

Gates open at 5:30pm. The concert begins at 7:30 but guests will enjoy a special performance by the Tryon Palace Fife and Drum Corps--wearing their new hand-sewn uniforms and carrying their new hand-sewn flag--shortly before the concert begins. Space may become limited, so we recommend arriving early.

This America 250 NC collaboration features patriotic favorites such as Sousa’s “The Stars and Stripes Forever,” John Williams’ “Liberty Fanfare,” the “Armed Forces Salute,” and Copland’s “Buckaroo Holiday.”

Please Note:
Attendees are welcome to bring lawn chairs and blankets for seating. Outside food and beverages are allowed, but no glass containers. Alcohol, to***co products, va**ng, fi****ms, and weapons of any kind are not permitted. No pets, but service animals are allowed.

On July 5, families, friends, and communities across the nation will gather for to celebrate the Semiquincentennial of the United States. We wanted to share a look at some of the historic cook books that Tryon Palace has in its collection.

Today we start with a recipe collection compiled by Florence Waters of New Bern. It shows how we share and keep recipes certainly changes over the years. She began compiling recipes in this book in 1889 and—as the book was passed down through generations—family members continued adding recipes to the book into the 1960s. Recipes were handwritten, clipped from periodicals and newspapers, and even include suggested substitutions to account for wartime rationing during the 1940s.

You can even browse these recipes in the Regional History Exhibit at the North Carolina History Center! There is a touchscreen kiosk in the exhibit that lets you flip through the pages, browse recipes, and find something you think would be a hit at your next potluck.
