today is the anniversary of the first bricks being laid to build the governor's mansion that would become known today as Tryon Palace?

On March 7, 1768, Governor Tryon wrote to the Earl of Shelburne. In his letter, he wrote, "The first Brick was laid the twenty sixth of August last, and the Body of the House is already carried up to the Plates; in six Weeks I expect to have the Roof on it. Several Persons who have passed through here from the other Colonies, esteem this House the Capital Building on the Continent of North America."

The Stable Office at the reconstructed Tryon Palace is the only part of the original structure that is still standing.

While not from North Carolina, it is hard to overstate the revolutionary person that was Dolly Parton. Thank you for bringing so many books to children across our wonderful state, and inspiring a generation. May many of those same kids grow up to read about Dolly and her impact on cultural and social history.

Kinda chic to visit Tryon Palace 💅

Today marks the anniversary of the Eyewitness Sketch of the North Carolina Brigade, which was created on Aug. 25, 1777. This sketch is the earliest known depiction of N.C. state troops and the second known depiction of female camp followers. This sketch is an important part of North Carolina history and is on loan from Museum of the American Revolution. It is available for the public to view for FREE in the North Carolina History Center.

On August 25, 1774, 71 delegates were present at the roll call for North Carolina’s First Provincial Congress. It was the first such meeting held in any of the colonies. Though the rebellious Congress was held in New Bern near Royal Governor Josiah Martin’s residence at Tryon Palace, no attempt was made to stop the assembly.
A month earlier, William Hooper had convened a meeting of colonists from the Cape Fear region who felt that a Provincial Congress, separate from North Carolina’s royal government, was urgently needed. Invitations to send delegates were dispatched and, in response, 30 counties and four towns held elections without delay.

The congress, which only lasted for three days, endorsed the proposal that the colonies hold a Continental Congress. To that end, the group selected William Hooper, Joseph Hewes, and Richard Caswell as delegates to that convention.
Aside from revolutionary topics, the delegates also discussed the basic rights and responsibilities of government. They were eager to exercise control over North Carolina’s affairs. The concluding pledge to support the actions of the forthcoming Continental Congress was a testament to their goal of self-government and to their preparedness to achieve that goal.

We hope you still come out and celebrate this historic event!

Unfortunately that means no parade, but the Tryon Palace Grounds and Gardens will still be open to the public for free from 9am to 12pm.

11:00 a.m. – Closing of Ceremony
This event is open to the public and FREE to attend.

NOTE: The Tryon Palace Gardens are open to the public free of charge from 9 am - Noon on Saturday, August 22nd.

About the New Bern Resolves on 1774
The New Bern Resolves represent reflected the growing discontent of the colonies with British rule. Adopted on August 27, 1774, by 71 delegates to North Carolina’s First Provincial Congress, the New Bern Resolves represented an early, expression of resistance to British policies by calling for economic sanctions against Great Britain and its trading partners. As one of the earliest calls for solidarity among the colonies, the New Bern Resolves laid the groundwork for broader a revolutionary movement.

In addition to inspiring other communities in North Carolina to adopt similar measures, the New Bern Resolves helped galvanize support for the First Continental Congress that met in Philadelphia in September 1774. Representatives from the colonies coordinated a collective response outlined in the Continental Association.

🌷☀A few shots from Wilson Park this morning!

Landscaping is underway with the next phase of our Inclusive Public Art sculpture installation scheduled to begin soon. The outer design and iconography will be painted on in the next few weeks. In the meantime, the park is looking beautiful with the new plants!

We'll share more information soon about our dedication ceremony that will be open to the public!
