Chris Trotter and I like to explore where we are working look what we found.

A little Indiana history hiding in plain sight.
This is Hillforest Mansion in Aurora, Indiana, built in 1855 for Thomas Gaff and his family.
Gaff was involved in banking, distilling, transportation, and steamboats on the Ohio River. The mansion’s curved balconies and unusual design were influenced by the riverboat era, giving it its distinctive “Steamboat Gothic” look.
There’s even a Civil War connection: one of the Gaff family’s steamboats, the Forest Queen, was used by Union General William T. Sherman during the Siege of Vicksburg.
Aurora itself grew as an important Ohio River town, and so much of that history can still be seen today.
Have you ever been inside Hillforest Mansion?
