Jamie Davis, For Louisiana, you are so right! The Louisiana State Beautician Association’s slogan was “Every Registered Beautician A Registered Voter.”

The 20th Century Black Licensed Beauticians were a quiet force. The women in white became underground grassroots activists during the Civil Rights Movement. During press-n-curl appointments, the beauticians could educate, motivate, and inspire their clients to register and exercise their right to vote.

And Price’s stands as a representation of that legacy— not just a place associated with beauty culture, but as a strong reminder of the women behind-the-chairs who advanced the struggle for voting rights, among other issues.

Whickam was a beautician, community leader, and national civil rights organizer who helped thousands of Black Americans access their right to vote.

Celebrating the pioneer, Annie Malone, who trained beauticians and business owners.

She was a pioneering inventor and entrepreneur in the early 1900s who shaped the cosmetics industry.

Annie Turnbo Malone founded Poro College to teach beauty and business skills, built a nationwide business network, and gave scholarships and donations to support Black education and entrepreneurs-showing how innovation can create opportunity.
