Recently minted MacArthur Fellow, Chip Thomas, will be joining us at the Museum to sit on the panel: The Legacy of the Buffalo Soldiers in the American West. We kick things off at 6pm bringing experts from across the region to discuss the Buffalo Soldiers’ complex legacy, interrogating how we understand traditional tales of settlement, opportunity, and identity. Johnny Taylor Valdez, Louis Gregory McAllister, and Chip Thomas come together to discuss these themes, and how we might approach a more complete history of the American West.

Panel moderated by Michele Jordan Johnson, Executive Director of Canyonlands Field Institute and former Trustee at the Moab Museum.

This program is October 8 at 6pm, and available both in-person at the Moab Museum and virtually at the link below.

Buffalo Soldiers Heritage Trail has a new exhibition feature: a Model 1859 McClellan Saddle!

Adopted by the U.S. Army in 1859, George B. McClellan’s rawhide-covered saddle tree featured an open longitudinal slot designed to relieve pressure on a horse’s spine while reducing overall weight. Though it became standard issue for Union cavalry during the American Civil War, Black troopers known as the Buffalo Soldiers did not ride it during that conflict.

The Model 1859 McClellan saddle remains an indispensable artifact in the story of the Buffalo Soldiers. Rather than defining their wartime service, it represents the hardscrabble transition of post-Civil War Black cavalrymen patrolling thousands of miles of Western wilderness on leftover Union gear.

Generously donated by Sena Taylor Hauer, for the Sema Hadithi Buffalo Soldier Heritage Trail exhibition, Hauer is a fifth-generation Moab resident, local journalist, and the owner-operator of Moab Horses at Hauer Ranch along the Colorado River. The saddle belonged to her late husband, John Hauer, who was a well-known Moab rancher, author, and co-founder of the Hauer Ranch. He raised mules, hosted trail rides, and wrote about working with pack animals.

Read more about it in the gallery! We're open Tuesday-Saturday 9am-5pm at 118 E Center St. Moab, UT!
