We are so happy to have had this wonderful group of retired missileers for a personal, guided tour through the museum! These folks were stationed at Minot AFB in the late 1950s and 1960s! Welcome back to Minot!

You’ve seen our warbirds, but did you know that the DTAM is home to dozens of civilian aircraft representing nearly every decade of powered flight? The Oswin Elker Memorial Wing houses vintage aircraft, many of which still fly, from the 1910s and beyond!

Meet Barry. Barry’s Dad, William, flew a P-51 named Darling Marion in World War II. In fact, William flew with Noble Peterson, the pilot of Dakota Kid, both having served with the 358th Fighter Squadron. Over the last six or eight months, arrangements were made for Barry to come out to Minot to not only see Dakota Kid, but he also got to fulfill a lifelong dream ride in the back!

Barry himself is a U.S. Marine who fought in Vietnam. He shared stories not only of his dad’s service, but also stories from his time in service. We are honored to be able to provide him this opportunity to see, even just a glimpse, of what his dad saw and felt as a Mustang pilot.

For us, it’s the human connection that matters. It’s stories like this we seek to make sure are preserved for future generations. It wasn’t just a Mustang ride, it was a son connecting with his dad in a way he never thought could be possible.
